The Engadget Show 32: ASUS, Huawei and a trip to Asia's gadget markets

Yep, we went way out for April's Engadget Show, taking our film crew to Asia this time out, to check out the markets of Taipei, Hong Kong and Shenzhen with our very own Richard Lai. We also scored interviews with Huawei's Chief of Design, Hagen Fendler and Michelle Hsiao of the ASUS Design Center. We'll be checking out the month's latest and greatest gadgets, including the HTC One X, S and V, Nokia Lumia 900 and the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, as well as a big ole pile of KIRFs -- some more convincing than others. We've also got a couple of performances by Brooklyn indie rockers Suckers and a whole bunch more.

Tyra Banks on America's Next Top Model Firing: Time for a Boost!

America's Next Top Model will look very different next season, as long-time contributors Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander were let go from The CW series this week.

What was the basis for their ousting?

"We reached a point where were feel the show needs a new boost," head honcho Tyra Banks told Access Hollywood at New York City's Matrix Awards. "It's very difficult because I love my guy."

Banks added that she's not against working with any of the trio down the line ("My partner Ken Mok and I have projects we're developing, and we're a family - it doesn't end," she said), though it's unclear if they feel the same way.

Barker has said he wasn't shocked by the decision to not renew his contract, but he also sounded a tad bitter this week when he wished good luck to his eventual replacement.

America's Next Top Model averages around one million viewers and will return for Cycle 19 this fall.

Still playing "Without You" on repeat? Well, it looks like David Guetta and Usher will have a new one for you to play over and over again soon.

The French hitmaker teased to The Hollywood Reporter that he's worked with the R&B star on new music. "These are really big records that we're working on right now," he said of the twosome's latest work. "It's really crazy."

How crazy? According to Guetta, "really, really, really crazy."

While it's unknown when the music will appear, the two recently hit the stage together at Coachella. And Guetta was just as surprised as his audience by the last-minute performance. "I was playing, and then he came to hang out and just to have a good time," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "Then I saw him on the side of the stage and I gave him the sign. He was like, 'Do you want me to do it with you? To come on stage?' and I was like, 'Hell yeah! Of course!'

Guetta and Usher found chart success together back in 2011 with "Without You." And the singer explained that it was just the right time and place for it.

"I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," Usher said about that song and how it relates to his musical philosophy. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is."

Guetta is currently working on new music, and Usher will drop his new album Looking For Myself in June.

Are you looking forward to a new song from Usher and David Guetta? Let us know in the comments!

The Great Recession's Effect on Small Loans to Business

Small loans to businesses continue to shrink, falling to $613 billion dollars at the end of 2011, the Small Business Administration (SBA) reports.

The dollar value of small loans is down substantially since the start of the financial crisis and Great Recession. SBA data reveals that the inflation-adjusted value of business loans of less than $1 million shrank by 19 percent between 2007 and 2011. As the figure below shows, we have yet to see any recovery in the real value of small loans to business.

Source: Created from data from Small Business Economy 2011

The amount lent has declined in large part because banks are making fewer loans. While the average value of loans shrank 6.7 percent since 2007, the number of loans fell 13 percent, from 24.5 million to 21.3 million. The SBA data doesn?t tell us whether all small businesses now have fewer loans or fewer small companies are borrowing, but other data suggests that the latter is true.

Much of the drop in loan volume comes from a decline in real estate lending. As probably would surprise few people, the number of commercial real estate loans dropped 39 percent between 2007 and 2011, a much larger decline than the 10 percent reduction in the number of commercial and industrial small business loans.

However, the large decline in the number of commercial real estate loans was not reflected in a decline in the value of the loans. The real dollar value of small commercial real estate loans fell only 17 percent between 2007 and 2011, less than the 20 percent drop in the value of real value of commercial and industrial small business loans.
