Ashley Moser, Mother Of Veronica Moser, 6-Year-Old Batman Shooting Victim, Too Fragile To Be Told Of Daughter's Death

Ashley Moser, the 25-year-old victim of Friday morning's movie theatre massacre in Aurora, Colo., remains in critical condition at the Aurora Medical Center with bullets lodged in her throat and abdomen. In her lucid moments she asks for Veronica, her 6-year-old daughter, unaware that the little girl has passed away, making her the youngest victim of the gunman's shooting rampage at Aurora's Century 16 movie theatre.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton, Ashley Moser's niece, told the Associated Press. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

The Denver Post describes Veronica as a "vibrant" child who was bragging a few days ago about learning to swim.

Doctors told the Post Ashley fades in and out of consciousness and will likely suffer some paralysis, but that they are hopeful she will regain some use of her hands. According to the report, Ashley was recently accepted to medical school.

Ashley's situation is not unlike that of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). When Giffords stabilized after being shot in the January 2011 Tucson, Ariz., massacre, her husband, Mark Kelly, had to tell her about the incident, and those who died, following the massacre. In an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, Giffords touched on the moment she found out about the other injuries and fatalities,

"I cried," she told Sawyer in her halted speech, adding she felt "sad."

Simple kids' health strategies work

New research provides support for old strategies for preventing childhood obesity and promoting healthy growth and development. Watching less TV, walking and biking to school, and playing sports can all contribute to good health and positive lifestyle habits.

  • In Denmark, researchers studied all the 7th to 9th graders in one city and showed that cycling to school was associated with lower BMI and lower odds of being overweight or obese compared to passive travel (like riding in a car). Walking to school was associated with lower odds of being overweight.
  • In Portugal, a study of teenage boys showed that those who participated in organized sports spent significantly more time in moderate to vigorous physical activity than non-participants.
  • A study of teens in New England reached a similar conclusion and predicted that obesity prevalence would decrease by 26% if adolescents played on at least two sports teams, and by 22% if teens walked or biked to school four or five days a week.

Samsung denied a second time, Galaxy Tab ban stands

Samsung denied a second time, Galaxy Tab ban standsYou can't blame 'em for trying, but it's no surprise that Samsung's second attempt to put a hold on the impending American ban of its Galaxy Tab failed. Judge Koh has already say the preliminary injunction could not wait while the Korean company pursued an appeal, and now the Court of Appeals is backing her up. To make matters worse, the court has also refused to expedite the appeal process, potentially prolonging the time the flagship slates are missing from the shelves. Now Sammy will just have to wait for the trial to start on July 30th and hope for a victory, or go back and redesign its tablets to look less like an iPad. We hear that triangles might be the ticket.

US forecast: Hot, dry weather to linger into fall

(AP) ? The unusually hot dry weather that has gripped the nation will not let up its stranglehold over the next few months, federal weather forecasters said Thursday.

And that means the heartland's "flash drought" will linger at least until around Halloween and even spread a bit farther north and east.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's outlook for August through October shows that nearly every state likely will have hotter than normal temperatures. Much of the Midwest is likely to be drier than normal, too.

"It certainly is grim news for us in Illinois and other parts of the Midwest," said Illinois state climatologist Jim Angel. "I kind of have given up hope for short-term relief."

New figures released Thursday show that the percentage of the country now suffering from drought edged up from nearly 51 percent last week to more than 53 percent this week; the chunk of the country experiencing severe drought or worse rose in one week from 31 percent to 35 percent. Experts call it a flash drought because it developed in a matter of months, not multiple seasons.

"It's really unpleasant," said drought specialist Kelly Helm Smith at the National Drought Mitigation Center in Nebraska. She said relief "is not on the radar that I'm aware of."

For the Midwest, forecasters don't see any improvement until at least past October. In fact, if the weather phenomenon El Nino forms as predicted, that means even more dry weather next winter for the Midwest and North, said seasonal forecaster Dan Collins of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in Maryland.

NOAA's forecast for just the month of August indicates a high probability for little rain for all or parts of 15 states that are the epicenter of the drought. That region encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Iowa and the states generally surrounding them.

All told, 42 states or parts of them have been hit by the drought. A NOAA map shows it stretches from California east to Ohio and from Texas north to Minnesota. Tiny pockets of drought also dot the East, including much of Georgia and South Carolina.

The forecast for the next three months would push the drought farther north into Minnesota, North Dakota and Michigan, and farther east into Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia. But in the Southwest, especially Arizona and New Mexico, and to a lesser degree Colorado and Utah, the drought will ease a bit. And the eastern drought pockets are also likely to improve a bit.

NOAA is also forecasting more triple-digit hot weather for several days starting Saturday for much of the Midwest from Kansas and Nebraska to Indiana and Michigan, with temperatures about 12 degrees hotter than normal. And that will make the drought even worse, forecasters say.

One of the main problems is the heat and lack of moisture are in a feedback loop. The ground is so dry that there's not enough moisture in the soil to evaporate into the atmosphere to cause rainfall. And that means hotter, drier air.

Illinois' Angel said the best chance for significant rain is going to come from the remnants of tropical storms or hurricanes that push into the Midwest, something that doesn't happen often.

"That's how desperate we are," Angel said.
