UWC training program recertified | University Writing Center

Print version

The University Writing Center?s consultant training program recently earned recertification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

In particular, the UWC was noted for having what reviewers called a ?very thorough and comprehensive training program.?

?Training consultants is essential to the Writing Center?s success, and we take it seriously,? says UWC Associate Director Candace Schaefer, who shepherded the UWC through the recertification process. ?We?re always looking for ways to help our consultants improve their skills, and preparing for the recertification gave us a chance to reevaluate our efforts.?

Consultants at the UWC take courses in tutoring, where they not only review basic writing and speaking skills, but also cover topics such as learning theory, active communication, and the ethics of tutoring. They also get additional information at weekly staff meetings and at day-long training sessions held twice yearly. New consultants are also required to observe experienced consultants and to be observed themselves during their first consultations.

?We expect a lot of our peer consultants,? says Schaefer, ?so it?s great that we can offer them CRLA certification as a recognition of all their hard work.?

The recertification was completed as part of the CRLA?s International Tutor Training Program Certification and covers all 3 levels of the UWC?s consultant training program.

FGS Conference News Blog: Exhibit Hall: Houstory Publishing

Dan Hiestand, a 2012 conference vendor, shared this about his company that will be in the Exhibit Hall this year.

Houstory Publishing: A window to the past, a gift to the future

Do you love your house? How do you plan on sharing all the stories that make your house a ?home?? How will you ensure your legacy is safely protected and accessible ? and not lost on an eventually obsolete hard drive or buried in the pages of a Web site?

A first-time participant at the FGS Conference, Houstory? Publishing is the creator of the Home History Book? archival journal series, a new, refreshingly simple product line designed to help record, preserve and share a home?s unique past as well as its present stories. A Home History Book (www.homehistorybook.com), which one might think of as akin to a ?baby book for a home,? is created and maintained by current homeowners. However, unlike a family?s personal scrapbook and photo albums, it is meant to stay with the home to be enjoyed by all who live there, now and in the future.

The company will be offering its ?Deluxe? book at a $100 discount during the FGS conference.

Believing that every house has a story, Houstory Publishing has designed its, beautiful heirloom-quality Home History Book (HHB) to serve two important functions:

First, it helps homeowners record their own stories ? their ?living history? ? which includes noting changes to the home?s physical structure, as well as documenting their own family?s time in the house. It is this personal history ? the stories of a family?s everyday life and/or significant events that occur while living in the home ? that give the property its unique character and feel. Unfortunately, such stories often go undocumented or, where they are recorded, they depart with the family when they leave the home. A Home History Book, as it is passed from one homeowner to the next, ensures that legacy lives on.

Second, the book provides homeowners who wish to document the history of their home an attractive, personalized and lasting way to record and share their findings with others. Much like discovering a time capsule filled with photos and precious hand-written letters, a Home History Book brings history alive and makes it accessible ? in full ?living? texture ? unlike ever-changing, ?flashier? mediums such as software or online media.

People already love their homes, and a Home History Book is a way to share that love and legacy now ? and into the future.

Old aerial photos supply new knowledge on glaciers in Greenland

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating rapidly with the ongoing global climate change. But now research from the University of Copenhagen shows that the glaciers can recuperate within a short timeframe if temperatures are to drop. The results are based on a collection of Danish aerial photos combined with both old and modern satellite imagery as well as field work. The scientific results have created international attention and have been published as a cover story in the highly esteemed journal Nature Geoscience.

"We have managed to get an overview of the glacial evolution over a period of 80 years. This is the first time ever this has been done in a study of glaciers in Greenland. Results show that glaciers can recuperate within a short time frame if climate changes and temperatures drop, as it has in a period after the 1940s," says PhD student and lead-author on the project Anders Bj?rk, from Professor Eske Willerslev's Centre for GeoGenetics from University of Copenhagen.

Anders Bj?rk adds:

"Most of the scientific foundation, models, and theories on glaciers in Greenland and how global warming affects them are based on observations from satellites over the last ten years. Otherwise scientists have had to use previous warming events way into the past when wanting to compare today's massive retreat."

A fight for land between Denmark and Norway

The Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen and his seventh Thule-expedition in 1932-33 is a significant cause for the recent publication from Anders Bj?rk and Dr. Kurt H. Kj?r from the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen. Results have created international attention as Greenland stands as an important region for northern latitudes are affecting the rest of the earth's climate ? including changes in glacial conditions and related sea-level rise.

Originally, the many aerial photos, which have been achieved Danish National Survey and Cadastre, were used for producing new maps of the region in the early 1930s, as Denmark and Norway were fighting over the right of disposal of East Greenland, a fight without casualties which Denmark won at the International Court in Haag in the Netherlands in 1933.

Photos get a renaissance

With help from the scientists and the Danish National Survey and Cadastre, the unique aerial photos have now gained a renaissance in a different setting where climate change and theories as "The Tipping Point" ? where nature reaches a point where changes cannot be reversed are discussed.

"We have investigated no less than 132 glaciers on a 600 km coastal stretch in Southeast Greenland, both those who terminate on land and those who calve in the ocean. The historical photos have proven to be extremely valuable, and with these photos and other aerial photos recorded later during WWII and satellite imagery we are able to observe glacier change in very long historical context. In the early 1920s and 1930s, temperatures were high, similar to that of the present, and this affected the glacial melt. At the time many glaciers underwent a melt similar or even higher than what we have seen in the last ten years. When it became colder again in the 1950s and 1960s, glaciers actually started growing," says Dr. Kurt H. Kj?r and underlines:

"There should be no doubt that if the current temperature rise in Greenland continues then we will have problems with the melting of the glaciers. We are already seeing it now on the marine terminating glaciers where changes in temperature and ocean currents are influencing their stability. Another remarkable discovery we did was that the observed changes are not just local, it is happening in the entire region," says Dr. Kj?r.

Kurt H. Kj?r has previously worked with his colleague Svend Funder from Center for GeoGenetics on investigating sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean. Results showed that the sea ice extent has been far from stable throughout the last 10,000 years.

Pamela H. Long: They Gave Their Best

Back in my Air Force Brat childhood, Memorial Day was a day to go to the flight line and see an air show, tour our dad's offices, and eat a lot of ice cream. The men of my father's generation were stalwart, laconic men of few illusions. Most of them had served in Korea, and many had seen combat in Vietnam as well.

My father retired in 1970, at the height of the Vietnam Conflict, and at that time, overt commemorations of Memorial Day were rare. Considering the polarization of the country over the merits of our involvement in Vietnam, and the ambiguity still inhering to our Korean engagement, there was little enthusiasm for civic or private ceremonies.

In 2005, I took my mother and a group of her friends to France during March -- not tourist high season, but a perfect time to visit Paris without a flurry of American tourists blocking our view of the Arc de Triomphe. One of the most anticipated events on our schedule was the day trip to Normandie, to visit the American cemetery at Caen. While walking the grounds at Caen and Omaha Beach, these normally chatty Southern women were awestruck and speechless. Many of us had relatives who fought on these beaches, some surviving, some paying the ultimate sacrifice. I'd like to share two things with you today -- one is a photo I took that day, another is a video of men serving in World War II, with a song by Nora Jones. No other words of mine are worthy of their sacrifice.

Hypnotherapy for Pain Management | Health and Fitness

Pain is a daily part of life for too many people. This pain is caused by injuries, temporary illnesses, chronic illnesses and other diseases. Unfortunately, many people think they simply have to live with the pain because medications either do not work or are too dangerous for them to take.

This is why some people choose to try hypnosis for pain management.

Imagine a cancer patient. This person is dealing with the physical pain associated with the growing tumor in their body, the surgeries they have had, and the injections they are receiving for treatments and other fluids. And on top of physical pain, they are dealing with the deeply painful emotional stresses of dealing with the severity of their disease and the concerns that the diagnosis implies.

These patients need a way to ease the physical pain they feel so that they can attempt to enjoy their lives to the best extent that they can. They also need to ease their anxiety levels since most people agree that healing is more likely to occur in a person who is rested and in a mental state that is positive. So other than daily affirmations and prayer (which certainly have benefits), what can be done?

For many people with pain issues, hypnotherapy is a good solution. Because a hypnotherapist helps a person focus their attention towards positive things, some people see really significant results. Additionally, the fact that the hypnosis state is a very relaxed state usually allows the patient?s body the healing time and general relaxation that it has not experience since being diagnosed with cancer. We all know that our minds are powerful, and this really proves it.

While in the hypnosis state, a patient can also address the anxiety related to their disease and the negative emotions that this has brought to them. It is no surprise that feeling more relaxed mentally will help a person feel more relaxed physically. The correlation between what we think and how we feel is very real.

Hypnosis can help a person change not only their physical pain, but their emotional problems too. This is one reason why it can be such a benefit for pain management patients. Making use of the great power of our mind to bring about change in our lives is worth the effort and time. Of course, treatments need to continue with a medical doctor when a patient?s pain is associated with something that needs to be treated, but dealing with the mental side of it is important too.

Tuesday:?Multi-award nominated?Do The Right Thing podcast is back recording at the Phoenix (7.30pm, ?6 / ?4). Danielle Ward hosts and this month team captains Michael Legge and Margaret Cabourn-Smith are joined by guests Robin Ince, Josie Long, John Finnemore, Jenny Eclair, Jon Ronson and Stevyn Colgan.

Wednesday:?It?s hard to know if there are still tickets available for Harry Hill at Monkey Business in Chalk Farm (8pm, ?15) because tickets aren?t available online. The Italian Texas BBQ Burger

The last couple of months I?ve been creating recipe using Johnsonville products and then sharing those recipes here with you (hopefully you?ve been enjoying them). The first month I created the Italian Sausage Rigatoni in Tomato Basil Sauce with Peppers and Kale and then last month I created the Whole Wheat Pancake Sausage Muffins.

This month my challenge was to create No Ordinary Burger using either the new Johnsonville Brat or Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties. Since my store did not carry the Johnsonville Brat Patties, I created my burger using Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties.

Italian Texas BBQ BurgerThis is definitely a messy burger and not for the faint of heart. It?s big, it?s flavorful and it?s delicious.? But, the best part of this burger is that it?s super simple to make.

The Italian Texas BBQ Burger

Author: Crystal @ SimplyBeingMommy.com

Prep time: 10 mins

Cook time: 20 mins

Total time: 30 mins

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 6 Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties
  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon
  • 6 slices cheese (we used Pepper Jack)
  • 6 tablespoons of your favorite barbeque sauce
  • 12-18 onion rings (2-3 per burger)

Directions

  1. Preheat grill to medium-low. Place frozen patties on the grill. Grill 15-18 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160?F, turning occasionally. While the patties are cooking away on the grill, start cooking the onion rings as directed on the package and fry the bacon until it?s slightly crispy. Drain the excess grease by placing the bacon on a couple sheets of paper towels.
  2. To assemble the burger, starting from the bottom up, place cooked Johnsonville Italian Sausage Pattie on bottom hamburger bun. Top with cheese, barbeque sauce, onion rings and finish with the bacon. Place the top hamburger bun on top of the pile of goodness and ENJOY!

2.2.6

If you are a fan of Italian Sausage, then you?ll really appreciate the boldness and full flavor of this burger. It?s definitely a different flavor from the beef burger you?re used to, but I think you?ll like it.

italian texas bbq burgerThe pictures really do not do this burger justice.? It was after dark when we made these, so the lack of natural lighting really did nothing at all for the pictures. ?But regardless of picture quality, you should definitely give the Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties a try.

Thanks to Johnsonville for sending me the goodies to make this recipe.

Senate Republicans may be on Board with ... - Marshfield Real Estate

Senate Republicans are considering some Democrat proposals to expand refinancing to even more Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac borrowers.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency expanded HARP last fall to reduce upfront fees, eliminate a cap on negative equity and reduce some repurchase risk for servicers of the original home loan to allow for more refinancings. Major banks finished installing the program in March, but a major refinancing surge remains elusive.

The Senate Banking Committee held a hearing Thursday on a bill from Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J. and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., to expand the Home Affordable Refinance Program. The bill would allow a new servicer of the loan avoid repurchase and warranty risk from the government-sponsored enterprises and extend the program to cover loans originated prior to June 2010 instead of June 2009.

Between 3 million and 4 million GSE borrowers are underwater, but to date, 1.2 million refinanced through HARP, and only 100,000 of them had loan-to-value ratios above 105%, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Analytics. The housing analytics firm Zillow ($40.27 -0.59%) released a report Thursday suggesting that the negative equity problem might be larger than originally thought.

While the Menendez-Boxer ideas have been floating around for some time, some parts of the bill at least garnered support from opposing Republicans Thursday, suggesting that a gridlocked Senate may be nearing a compromise.

?I?m open to this. I hope that we?ll have a real mark-up on this bill,? said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.

However, Corker expressed some concern about allowing borrowers to refinance through the program multiple times. He also signaled opposition to expanding the eligibility date to June 2010.

?There?s been an unwritten rule that ? we would not fiddle with things beyond June of 2009,? Corker said.

Zandi, a proponent of the bill, agreed.

?Between June 2009 and June 2010 there were already low rates, and I don?t think you?re giving up a lot of refinances if you keep the date where it is,? he said.

Increasing competition for an expanded HARP seemed to get the most support. Roughly 70% of GSE loans are serviced by the largest banks. Under the expanded program, the original servicer is required to underwrite a new loan to GSE guidelines. Instead, it must only verify a reliable source of income.

If a borrower goes to a new servicer for a HARP refi, the new bank must meet GSE underwriting guidelines for a new loan, thus making it more exposed to buy back the loan should it default.

?We need to inject competition into a market where the largest servicers have an unfair monopoly,? Menendez said at the hearing.

But so much business going to these firms is also slowing down the program.

?They simply can?t ramp up platforms and hire people fast enough to help the millions of homeowners eligible,? said Bill Emerson, CEO of Quicken Loans, which could see a wave of new business if the restrictions are lifted for new servicers. ?This results in higher prices for new HARP 2.0 mortgages than otherwise would have existed. Simply implementing more competition could help million of underwater borrowers in short order.?

Corker said he was open to this as long as taxpayers wouldn?t be left without a major tool to limit bailouts needed for Fannie and Freddie.

?I would be open to streamlining in such a way without eviscerating the GSEs ability to put the loans back,? Corker said. ?We are saving taxpayers a lot of money by putting loans back.?

Christopher Papagianis, managing director for the economic policy think tank e21, is concerned mortgage bond investors, overwhelmed by the continual expansion of government programs, would begin pricing in such a risk, demand more yield and thus making home loans more expensive in the future.

?The new HARP only just began in March. It?s also important to recognize that implementing a new program would delay the HARP 2.0 boom that is not yet underway,? Papagianis said.

Zandi stressed throughout the hearing that something should be done soon while the Federal Reserve, which happens to be largest investor in mortgage bonds, is keeping rates low.

In 2003, when fixed-rate mortgages were between 5.5% and 6%, mortgages refinanced at an annualized rate of more than $4 trillion, Zandi said in his written testimony. The current level is roughly a fourth of that.

?I would not try to not complicate this in anyway, unless it is clear that it would make it better, because it would slow things down and you will lose your window,? Zandi told Menendez. ?We are very, very close to more refinancing.?

Who's an American Indian? Warren case stirs query

What, exactly, makes someone American Indian? Even Indians themselves don't agree as they debate the case of Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, whose disputed claim of Native American identity is shining a rare spotlight on the malleable nature of Indian heritage and the long history of murky claims to such ancestry.

Warren, a Harvard Law School professor and Democrat who is running in Massachusetts against Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, was listed as Native American in several law school directories. Warren has said that her "family lore" described Indian ancestors, and the New England Genealogy Association said it found indications ? but not proof ? that Warren had a Cherokee great-great-great grandmother, which would make her 1/32 Indian.

"I'm proud of my heritage," Warren said Thursday. Asked how she knew it included Native Americans, she replied, "Because my mother told me so."

Her opponents question whether Warren chose this heritage to gain advantages available to Indians and other underrepresented groups in academia.

"Warren has zero evidence that she is at all Native American," said Brown's campaign manager, Jim Barnett. The genealogy association acknowledges that it found only secondary references to Cherokee family members, not primary sources such as marriage, birth or census records.

Among Native Americans, the varying opinions demonstrate that Indian identity is subjective even among Indians themselves.

When David Eugene Wilkins first saw Warren interviewed during her nomination to a federal post, he was smitten by her intelligence and politics. But when he heard about her claims of Indian ancestry, "I shook my head and said, 'Oh no.'"

"For us it was always about allegiance rather than biology or ancestry," said Wilkins, an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe and professor of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota.

"It's where you place your political, cultural, emotional allegiance. She lived her entire life and never had any association whatsoever with any community. So something doesn't wash for me," Wilkins said.

But David Treuer, an award-winning writer and Ojibwe Indian from Leech Lake Reservation in Minnesota, said there is a difference between Indian identity and ancestry ? you can have one without the other.

"An Indian identity is something someone claims for oneself; it is a matter of choice," Treuer wrote in a Washington Post essay titled, "Elizabeth Warren says she's Native American. So she is."

There are 566 federally recognized Native American tribes, each with its own rules for membership, according to the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, or BIA. Some tribes require a "blood quantum" measurement of as much as one-half or one-quarter Indian ancestry; others require a certain place of birth or residence.

Wilkins, the professor, is married to a Navajo with many siblings. "I've asked them what defines a Navajo," he said. "One said you have to speak the language. Another said you have to live within our sacred mountains. Another said no, you have to take part in ceremonial life. All this in one family!"

According to census figures provided by the BIA, an estimated 4.5 million people identify themselves as American Indians or Alaska Natives, including those who say they are more than one race. But in a 2005 report, the most recent available, the BIA counted just 2 million enrolled tribal members ? which means that fewer than half of all people claiming Indian heritage are recognized by a tribe.

"There's an old joke in this corner of Indian Country that if you meet someone who doesn't know anything about tribal affairs but claims they're Indian, they'll say they're Cherokee," Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton, a spokesperson for the Cherokee Nation, said by e-mail.

Warren grew up in Oklahoma, home of the 310,000-member Cherokee Nation, the largest Indian tribe. Warren does not claim official Cherokee membership, which is based on the "Dawes Rolls," a federal list of Cherokees in Oklahoma from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many people have legitimate Cherokee ancestry but are not eligible for membership because their ancestors were not among those counted, Krehbiel-Burton said.

But "some people falsely claim Native heritage simply out of ignorance," Krehbiel-Burton said. "They've been told for years that they had a great-grandmother (or something similar) who was a Cherokee princess and assume that it's true."

Warren spoke of a similar oral tradition when she mentioned an heirloom photo of her grandfather: "My Aunt Bea has walked by that picture at least a thousand times (and) remarked that he ? her father, my papaw ? had high cheekbones like all of the Indians do."

Even President Barack Obama has an Indian story, about his maternal grandmother, who was nicknamed "Toot."

"If asked, Toot would turn her head in profile to show off her beaked nose, which, along with a pair of jet-black eyes, was offered as proof of Cherokee blood," Obama wrote in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father."

But eyes, noses and cheekbones are not the issue for Rhonda LeValdo, president of the Native American Journalists Association and an enrolled member of the Acoma Pueblo tribe.

"If you're going to claim it, you have to help your people out," says LeValdo. She had seen no evidence of such involvement by Warren, but said she didn't know enough details to judge Warren's claim.

LeValdo said there are many fakers: "A lot of people find some sort of romanticism in being Native American. They think of the warrior type, or the Pocohontas stereotype. They're just taken with the idea of it."

"But to a lot of our people who live this life, it's tough," she continued. "We deal with a lot of things. A lot of us feel like if you're going to claim it, you have to do something. Don't just use it when you want to use it."

Warren has been adamant that she did not seek any advantage from Native American heritage. Records show that she declined to apply for admission to Rutgers Law School under a minority student program and identified her race as "white" on an employment record at the University of Texas, where she worked from 1983 to 1987.

She left Texas for the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where a report on minority faculty listed Warren's name. Her ethnicity became a campaign issue when the Boston Herald reported that Harvard Law, which hired Warren in 1995, listed her as a minority when the school was under pressure to diversify the faculty.

Besides potentially influencing hiring or promotion, Indian identity can have other economic advantages. Some tribes share millions in casino earnings; health care, scholarships and housing are available to some tribal members.

Native Americans have a high rate of intermarriage with other groups. Many are not identifiable by appearance, which has made it possible for almost anyone to assume a Native persona ? for various purposes.

Some of the American colonists who boarded British ships during the Boston Tea Party wore Mohawk costumes. During New York anti-rent conflicts of the 1840s, white people assumed Indian garb and pidgin "Injinspeak" as they harassed patrician estates, according to the book "Playing Indian," by Philip J. Deloria.

The actor Iron Eyes Cody starred as an Indian in films from the 1930s to the '70s, and championed many Native causes. He claimed to be Cherokee, but near the end of his life was revealed to be the son of Italian immigrants. In 1976, former Ku Klux Klansman Asa Earl Carter published a fabricated and best-selling memoir, "The Education of Little Tree," under the name Forrest Carter.

"When that kind of fraud takes place it damages our people," said Wilkins, the professor.

"You have people on the outside claiming this and that to draw attention to themselves," he said, "and then people on the outside may wonder, do Native people really know who they are?"

SF official says Ouija board comment was joke

(AP) ? A San Francisco supervisor who said he consulted a Ouija board before a vote now says he was joking ? and the only spirit he was summoning was the spirit of humor.

Supervisors on Tuesday approved a non-binding resolution urging the Navy to name a ship after slain supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Supervisor John Avalos told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/MIq4dT ) that before voting, he believes he made contact with Milk's spirit and that Milk spelled out letters indicating: "Good riddance to don't ask, don't tell."

The quip made national news as an example of San Francisco wackiness.

Avalos now says he was just kidding and the closest he's gotten to the occult is reading all the "Harry Potter" books.

Downsizers ?Driving Force? in UK Housing Market

A property marketing website says that downsizers are the biggest driving force in the UK property market at the moment.

According to online property marketing giant Rightmove, members of the baby boomer generation are choosing to sell off large family homes and downsize into smaller properties.

Cash Buyers Have Strong Bargaining Power

This means that the market is currently being driven by a swathe of cash buyers with strong bargaining power ? a fact that has been blamed for the house price stall reported last month.

A survey for the popular home selling site revealed that four out of ten buyers are looking to trade down, while just a quarter of buyers are looking to move up the ladder.

The information has implications for anyone currently trying to sell their home as marketing efforts for smaller homes are often targeted at the first time buyer or young family market, whose needs are distinctly different from those of the downsizer.

Reappraise Property Marketing to Appeal to Older Audience

Homeowners who are looking to sell homes at the lower end of the market may wish to reappraise their strategy, looking at whether the existing property photography, brochures and virtual tours will appeal to the older buyer.

Sellers should consider targeting marketing more towards lifestyle buyers ? staging spaces to appeal to those who wish to be able to enjoy the whole of their home, for example turning a playroom into a relaxing reading space or a smaller bedroom into a study or studio space.

There is nothing better than a ripe, red, homegrown tomato, and now researchers reporting online on May 24 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, have figured out just what it is that makes some of them so awfully good (and your average supermarket tomato so bland).

"We now know exactly what we need to do to fix the broken tomato," said Harry Klee of the University of Florida.

Tomato flavor depends on sugars, acids, and a host of less well-defined aroma volatiles (so named for the ease with which they vaporize, sending scent molecules into the air). Klee's team set out to define the chemicals that are most important to our fondness for one particular tomato or another.

First, they assembled chemical profiles of 278 tomato samples representing152 heirloom varieties, most of which were bred before the ubiquitous commercial tomatoes of today even existed. That effort turned up an unexpectedly large chemical diversity within the heirloom tomatoeswith variation in some volatile contents of as much as 3,000-fold across cultivars.

That diversity presented the researchers with an opportunity to really explore what makes consumers favor one tomato over another. They did a series of taste tests with a consumer panel using a subset of those heirlooms that represented the most chemical diversity. Panelists rated their overall liking of each variety as well as the overall tomato flavor intensity, sweetness, and sourness. Panelists also rated supermarket tomatoes in the same way.

A sophisticated statistical analysis of the chemistry and taste test results showed that flavor intensity traces to 12 different compounds and sweetness to another 12, including 8 that were also important for overall flavor.

The researchers also found that some flavor volatiles influence the perception of sweetness through our sense of smell. "In other words," Klee says, "there are volatile chemicals unrelated to sugars that make things taste sweeter." That raises the tantalizing possibility that this feature might be played up in tomatoes and other foods to make us experience no-calorie sweetness through our noses instead of our tongues.

The analysis also showed that some of the volatiles most abundantly present in tomatoes offer little in terms of our enjoyment of them in comparison to other and much more rare ingredients.

"This is the first step to restoring good flavor in commercial tomatoes," Klee says, and that could go a long way.

"Consumers care deeply about tomatoes," he says. "Their lack of flavor is a major focus of consumer dissatisfaction with modern agriculture. One could do worse than to be known as the person who helped fix flavor."
