Superstorm moves film from theoretical to concrete

(AP) ? In the documentary "Shored Up," scientists warn that with a rising sea level, a major storm could put New Jersey's barrier islands underwater and create devastating storm surges. In other words, what happened last month when Superstorm Sandy slammed into New Jersey and New York.

For Ben Kalina, the Philadelphia filmmaker who was nearly finished putting together the documentary when the storm hit, it meant that the ideas in the film that may have sounded far-fetched ? or at least, discussions of something that may happen sometime in the future ? were suddenly immediate.

"Until Sandy, we were making a film about something much more meditative, really," Kalina said. "And now the stakes are suddenly much more real."

It also meant Kalina and his crew had more shooting to do, revisiting places they'd shot ? some of which were wiped away by Sandy.

That again pushed back the completion date for a film he'd been working on for three years. He's now planning to finish the film in January. It's an independent effort that he is hoping will be shown on television. He is also planning to hold screenings, particularly in the places featured in the movie, such as New Jersey's Long Beach Island.

Kalina, 36, is not a scientist, but he's fascinated by telling the stories from science by looking at the cultural and political implications, too. He worked on "A Sea Change," about the state of the world's oceans, and "After the Cap," a look back at the Gulf oil spill of 2010, among other films.

He became interested in the state of barrier islands after reading an article about how surfers opposed beach replenishment projects on the New Jersey shore.

The story became broader than that, evolving into a look at the way shore areas are developed and protected through means like jetties and beach replenishment projects. As more structures are built on barrier islands, he said, more has to be done to protect them. "Once you decide to settle in a place that's so fraught, all the decisions you make have consequences and more consequences," he said.

The solutions can be expensive, and Kalina says, not sustainable.

"Beach replenishment is not going to save the day," he said. "You get this sense of security from beach replenishment that's a false sense of security in the long run."

The film uses animation, interviews with scientists, footage of storms past and some dramatic policy debates to tell the story.

Kalina started out focusing on New Jersey's Long Beach Island, but also traveled to North Carolina. There, officials decided this year to use historical trends to build their expectations for oceanside building codes and land-use decisions rather than the more rapid sea-level rise that many scientists now expect.

The filmmaker, who grew up going to family homes on Martha's Vineyard, said the ideal time to address these how best to develop vulnerable coastlines would be before a major storm, not after one.

The irony is that nothing can draw attention to the issue like a storm.

"It's a window of time when people have actually just witnessed the destructive force of nature," he said. "There are very few windows like that."

And it could also be a window for his movie.

Before the storm, when he talked about it in his neighborhood in South Philadelphia, Kalina said, he found himself explaining what a barrier island is.

Now, practically everyone knows.

Video: Blind patient reads words stimulated directly onto the retina

Friday, November 23, 2012

For the very first time researchers have streamed braille patterns directly into a blind patient's retina, allowing him to read four-letter words accurately and quickly with an ocular neuroprosthetic device. The device, the Argus II, has been implanted in over 50 patients, many of who can now see color, movement and objects. It uses a small camera mounted on a pair of glasses, a portable processor to translate the signal from the camera into electrical stimulation, and a microchip with electrodes implanted directly on the retina. The study was authored by researchers at Second Sight, the company who developed the device, and has been published in Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics on the 22nd of November.

"In this clinical test with a single blind patient, we bypassed the camera that is the usual input for the implant and directly stimulated the retina. Instead of feeling the braille on the tips of his fingers, the patient could see the patterns we projected and then read individual letters in less than a second with up to 89% accuracy," explains researcher Thomas Lauritzen, lead author of the paper.

Similar in concept to successful cochlear implants, the visual implant uses a grid of 60 electrodes?attached to the retina?to stimulate patterns directly onto the nerve cells. For this study, the researchers at Second Sight used a computer to stimulate six of these points on the grid to project the braille letters. A series of tests were conducted with single letters as well as words ranging in length from two letters up to four. The patient was shown each letter for half a second and had up to 80% accuracy for short words.

In this video, a patient reads words with the Argus II setup using the camera and not the direct braille stimulation. Credit: Second Sight

"There was no input except the electrode stimulation and the patient recognized the braille letters easily. This proves that the patient has good spatial resolution because he could easily distinguish between signals on different, individual electrodes." says Lauritzen.

According to Silvestro Micera at EPFL's Center for Neuroprosthetics and scientific reviewer for the article, "this study is a proof of concept that points to the importance of clinical experiments involving new neuroprosthetic devices to improve the technology and innovate adaptable solutions."

Primarily for sufferers of the genetic disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the implant Argus II has been shown to restore limited reading capability of large conventional letters and short words when used with the camera. While reading should improve with future iterations of the Argus II, the current study shows how the Argus II could be adapted to provide an alternative and potentially faster method of text reading with the addition of letter recognition software. This ability to perform image processing in software prior to sending the signal to the implant is a unique advantage of Argus II.

Sparrow for iPhone updates with iPhone 5 and Passbook support

Sparrow, the email client for iPhone that was recently acquired by Google, surprisingly received an update that includes support for the iPhone 5's larger display and the ability to open Passbook attachments. The is surprising because with the acquisition, the developers said that there was no plan to release new features to the Sparrow apps.

Now, iPhone 5 and Passbook support aren't exactly huge new features, but still more than I was expecting. However, there are many reports of this new version causing the app to crash and be unusable, so if you use Sparrow as your primary mail client on your iPhone, you may want to stay clear of the update for now.

Do any of you still use Sparrow? How's the update working out for you?

Madrid, AC Milan into last 16 of Champions League

By NESHA STARCEVIC

updated 5:25 p.m. ET Nov. 21, 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -Real Madrid and AC Milan, with 16 Champions League titles between them, advanced to the knockout stage on Wednesday, along with Borussia Dortmund and Schalke to make it three out of three teams from Germany.

Nine-time champion Madrid held on for 1-1 at Manchester City with 10 men, eliminating the English Premier League champion in the process. Also in Group D, Dortmund beat Ajax 4-1 to go through as the top team.

Seven-time winner Milan got a spectacular overhead goal from defender Philippe Mexes as it went through with a 3-1 win at 10-man Anderlecht. Malaga drew 2-2 at Zenit St. Petersburg to win Group C.

Schalke defeated Olympiakos 1-0 and Arsenal beat Montpellier 2-0 to progress out of Group B.

Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev to go through from Group A with FC Porto, which beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-0. Zagreb still hasn't scored a goal, let alone earned a point.

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Shakhtar Donetsk and Valencia also reached the knockout stage, while Chelsea was on the verge of becoming the first titleholder to fail to make it out of the group stage.

Chelsea's 3-0 loss at Juventus cost Roberto Di Matteo his job as coach despite leading the London club to the title in May. Rafa Benitez, who won the 2005 title with Liverpool, was hired to replace him in an interim role.

The goal of the day belonged to Mexes against Anderlecht.

Receiving a free kick outside the box with his back to goal, Mexes sent a perfectly executed overhead kick from 20 meters out that dipped over goalkeeper Silvio Proto and into the far corner.

The goal resembled the fourth strike by Zlatan Ibrahimovic against England last week. Ibrahimovic failed to score on Wednesday, but Ezequiel Lavezzi notched a double as Paris Saint-Germain cruised in Kiev.

Germany forward Lukas Podolski also had an eye-catching goal in Arsenal's win over Montpellier that also featured Jack Wilshere's first strike in two years. The Gunners advanced from the group stage for the 13th straight year.

Podolski met Olivier Giroud's floated pass with a powerful first-time strike from the edge of the area in the 63rd.

Assured of a top-two finish, Arsenal will go into its last Group B game at Olympiakos a point behind Schalke. Both sides will want to finish top to secure what would likely be an easier last-16 match.

"That's 13 times in a row - it's not the most glamorous thing but it's the most difficult, being consistent at this level," said Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, whose team has gone on to reach the final only in 2006 when it lost 2-1 to Barcelona.

Manchester City's campaign ended in the group stage for the second successive season. City needed a win to keep its hopes alive, but Karim Benzema exploited sloppy defending to put Madrid ahead after just 10 minutes at Etihad Stadium.

City secured a lifeline in the 74th when Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off for fouling Sergio Aguero, who subsequently equalized from the penalty spot.

But in Jose Mourinho's 100th match managing in the Champions League, Madrid held on for the draw to qualify behind leader Borussia Dortmund with a game to spare.

"The only two times I finished second in the group, I won the Champions League," said Mourinho, who won the competition with FC Porto and Inter Milan. "It means something (to finish top), but my experience is, it doesn't mean so much."

City was at the bottom with just three points from five matches.

"With the array of players at their disposal it is amazing they have been eliminated at the group stage two years running," Mourinho said.

Young Italy forward Stephan El Shaarawy scored one goal and set up Alexandre Pato in injury time as Milan beat Anderlecht. Milan is compensating for its struggles in the Serie A.

Dortmund, which failed to advance from the group stage last season, extended its impressive run, with Germany midfielder Mario Goetze involved in all four goals, including two by Robert Lewandowski.

Dortmund, the 1997 champion, sealed the win before halftime at Amsterdam Arena thanks to its clinical finishing on the break and Goetze's skill and vision.

Ajax captain Siem de Jong was impressed.

"In the first half they were only in front of goal three times and they scored three goals. They were so effective," De Jong said.

Schalke left it late to secure its win, with defender Christian Fuchs driving home from long range with 13 minutes remaining.

"When you get such a chance you have to take it with both hands," Fuchs said.

Detroit council rejects condition for cash infusion

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit will not get a much-needed $10 million after the city council rejected on Tuesday a contract to hire a law firm that was part of a deal to keep the city on track to overhaul its finances.

The state of Michigan and its biggest city, Detroit, announced a deal last week that includes several milestones the city must achieve in the next month to receive the $10 million by Tuesday and another $20 million by December 14.

The setback leaves the city at risk of running out of cash by the end of December if it does not meet those goals.

In a voice vote, the city council rejected a contract for the law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone to provide legal advice and to handle litigation related to implementing a financial stability agreement designed to fix city finances.

The rejection "means the city will not receive the first $10 million scheduled for release today," said Mayor Dave Bing in a statement issued right after the vote.

Mayor Bing said the rejection of the contract will make it more difficult for Detroit to maintain positive cash flow.

"It will be more difficult for the city to maintain its liquidity until the receipt of property tax revenues beginning in January. Today's vote is one more example of how city council has stalled our efforts to bring financial stability to the city of Detroit," the mayor said in the statement.

Detroit has struggled with its finances for many years as the city's population has dwindled and the automotive industry that once drove economic activity in the Motor City has diminished.

The city of 700,000 has been criticized by state officials for slow progress on financial reforms. It needs the money to avoid running out of cash by the end of the year. The Michigan Finance Authority raised $137 million for Detroit earlier this year through a debt sale. While Detroit received some of that money, Michigan Treasury officials tied another $30 million to Detroit's progress on reforms.

"If the milestones are not completed, the funds will not be released from escrow," Caleb Buhs, spokesman for the Michigan Treasury Department, told Reuters.

"The actions Detroit must take for the treasurer to release the funds from escrow were clearly established in the Memorandum of Understanding, sent to the mayor and city council last week," Buhs said.

City Council President Charles Pugh blamed Bing for the setback. "Why is Mayor Bing putting the city's finances at risk by marrying himself to one law firm?" he told reporters, adding he wants to meet with the mayor this week to choose a law firm that the council can accept.

Council members raised several objections about Miller Canfield, including potential conflicts of interest in the work it performs for the city and the state and the scope of the contract. Some questioned whether the contract was legal under the city's charter because it was neither prepared nor approved by the city's chief on-staff lawyer.

Projections presented by city officials to Detroit's oversight board earlier this month showed the city's weekly cash flow at just $4.1 million in mid-December before dropping to a negative $4.8 million at the end of the year.

Detroit's financial advisory board was created under an agreement that allowed Detroit to avoid the appointment of an emergency manager to run the city while giving the state some oversight and allowing the mayor to disregard collective bargaining agreements with unions.

The city council did approve on Tuesday a contract with Ernst & Young to provide cash-flow analysis for 2013. This was another condition set in the deal with the state.

Pugh said the council had previously approved a contract with consulting and actuarial firm Milliman for pension services, which was also a condition of the deal. While the council is officially scheduled to be in recess until early next year, Pugh said it could come back in a special session at any time.

Also on Tuesday, the council rejected a nearly $48 million contract with St. Paul-based EMA Inc to run some of the city's water and sewer department.

Detroit faced a cash crisis this summer that led to warning it could default on some bonds. The cash crunch and default were averted by the bond sale.

Add 20 to 50 Pounds To Your Max Deadlift With This Bar-in-Belly ...

This is my ?secret? exercise for improving what is generally the weakest point of a lifter once you start getting into near-maximal weights on the deadlift?and that?s the core.? More specifically, it?s the core ?folding? as the pressure of the heavy weight overcomes the bracing pressure you?re able to exert with your core to support your torso.

That?s where this exercise comes into play?and it targets that issue VERY specifically. When done consistently, you could absolutely increase your deadlift by 20 to 50 lbs or more, depending on how limiting your core is to start with AND you?ll be able to maintain better lumber spine position as you?re lifting, which will protect your back.

It?s a GREAT exercise?though it will be extremely uncomfortable. But I have a feeling if you?re seeking to lift massive weights in the deadlift, you?re not concerned with staying comfortable anyway.

So to do ths one, you?ll need two bars and a rack. A bar pad is also useful here, though a rolled-up towel will do in a pinch, if you don?t have a bar pad.

Set the safety rails to just above knee height and put the barbell pad on the bar. Push the bar right up against the uprights of the rack.

Set a barbell on the ground just in front of the rack. Start with a lighter weight?just 135 lbs the first time you do this. You can work up from there as needed. I?m using 225 lbs and it?s tough.

Next, get yourself into position as though you were about to do a deadlift (the position won?t be exactly the same, but very close). The bar in the rack should be right in your belly.

Now lift the bar off the ground. Your abs will have NO CHOICE but to brace and brace HARD. Because if they don?t, the bar doesn?t come off the ground and your internal organs get mashed.

Hold for 10 to 15 seconds or so, then set the bar back down on the ground. Rest a few seconds then repeat. Do 3 to 5 reps then rest 60 to 90 seconds then go again. Do at least 3 sets of this.

This is not only going to train you to brace your core at the start of the deadlift but will also really strengthen those bracing muscles in the core. It?s incredibly effective at targeting the exact position needed for preventing that ?foldover? that occurs when you get into heavier weights in the deadlift.

This exercise can be trained along with the deadlift or on separate days. If you train it on the same day, you can do it one of two ways?before you do heavy lifting, to fire up those bracing muscles (in which case, you want to stay lighter so you don?t pre-fatigue them too much and compromise core stability) or you can do them right after. If you do them after, you can go heavier and not have to worry about it.

Use this exercise at least once a week for 3 to 4 weeks and see how your top-end deadlifts respond. I have a strong feeling you?ll be seeing massive improvements in your heavy deadlifting very quickly, especially if core-folding is an issue for you, like it is for me.

Australia Needs to Be Alert for Skin Cancer Diagnosis | TopNews ...

Australia Needs to Be Alert for Skin Cancer DiagnosisAustralians are amongst those who get affected by skin cancer the most, a recent report has revealed. It is thus that people in the nation are these days being urged by experts to get themselves checked for the same.

Kelly-named woman is one of the people, who do not prefer visiting a doctor to get themselves diagnosed or tested for a disease. But recently, she also went to the President of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia Dr. Richard Johns and CEO of Melanoma Patients Australia Will Kerhoff to have a word on the illness after the requests.

Since, it is being warned highly that the sun burns the skin and any one can have the same. Experts are saying that one should go for a diagnosis before their moles or freckles, if any, grow and become dangerous cancers.

They say that the rates of Melanoma have doubled over last two decades and in case diagnoses fail in future also, the rates may upsurge further. This is the reason why doctors are being given training on the use of a 'dermatoscope', which can magnify moles on the skin.

"We're trying to train doctors to be proficient is the use of a dermatoscope, but I'd like to see every doctor in Australia have a dermatoscope next to their stethoscope?, affirmed Dr. Johns.

Lawmakers urged to investigate Chinese cyber espionage

Lawmakers should investigate China's cyber espionage of U.S. military, government and commercial targets, a congressional advisory panel urges in a new report released Wednesday.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission made 32 recommendations to Congress, including reviewing legal penalties for companies found to engage in or benefit from industrial espionage. It also urged lawmakers to reexamine foreign direct investment from China to the United States and to consider requiring a mandatory review of controlling investments by government-controlled firms and adding an economic benefit test for Chinese investments.

?We have recommended that relevant Congressional committees further review Chinese cyber espionage practices and report their findings in an unclassified format,? committee Chairman Dennis Shea said in his opening remarks at a congressional hearing on the report. ?In addition, we have recommended that Congress review acquisition and procurement guidelines to ensure that the U.S. department of Defense has the necessary tools to mitigate cyber-related supply chain threats.?

America's trade deficit with China was a major issue during the presidential election, during which both candidates battled for votes in the industrial Midwest, which has been hit hard by the recession. Wednesday's report urges Congress to require reciprocity in any future bilateral investment treaty negotiations with China.?

The committee was created by an act of Congress in 2000 to assuage lawmakers' concerns about admitting China to the World Trade Organization. Its reports often garner more attention in China than in the United States, and this year was no different.

?The relevant commission has not let go of its Cold War mentality. We hope the relevant commission can discard its prejudice, respect facts, and cease its interference in China's internal politics and making of statements that are harmful to China-U.S. relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters in Beijing on Wednesday.?

?Regarding Internet security, we have repeatedly pointed out that China resolutely opposes internet attacks and has established relevant laws ... The content of the relevant report is not helpful in building trust and respect between China and the U.S., or in conducting further cooperation.?

LED Lightbulb Replacements Hit Stores Empty Of 100-Watt Bulbs

NEW YORK -- Sorry to see 100-watt bulbs disappear from stores because they were energy hogs? You can now get LED bulbs that roughly match the 100-watters for size and brightness, but use far less energy.

Until recently, your only alternative was a compact fluorescent bulb, which has several drawbacks compared with light-emitting diodes. Most people see the light quality as less pleasing, and the bulbs contain a small amount of mercury that's released if the glass breaks. LEDs, by contrast, don't contain any volatile, hazardous substances and are durable. They also last longer.

Osram Sylvania, a division of Germany's Siemens AG, said Monday that it's shipping the first batches of its Ultra LED bulb to some Lowe's stores. The bulb uses 20 watts of electricity and costs $50. It's slightly larger than a regular 100-watt bulb, so it may not fit in all fixtures. Osram claims 25,000 hours of use, or more than 20 times the lifespan of a standard, incandescent bulb.

Competitors aren't far behind. Royal Philips Electronics NV plans to start selling its own, slightly brighter 100-watt-equivalent LED bulb at Home Depot's website starting in a few weeks for about $55. Startup Switch Lighting Bulb Co., with its unusual liquid-filled bulbs, plans to start selling 100-watt equivalents late this year or in January.

The federal government banned the manufacture of regular 100-watt bulbs on Jan. 1 as a consequence of new energy-efficiency standards. Much the way it forces car manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency, the government is forcing the lighting industry to move away from incandescent bulbs because they convert relatively little of the electrical input into light. Most of the energy is dissipated as heat. In the next step, 75-watt bulbs will be banned at the start of next year, and 60-watt and 40-watt bulbs at the start of 2014.

Compact fluorescent bulbs that produce light equivalent to 100-watt bulbs have been available for a few years and cost as little as $4 each.

LEDs are small chips that produce light when current passes through them. In their red and green incarnations, they've been around for decades. Technical breakthroughs in the 90s allowed the manufacture of chips that produce white light.

LED bulbs equivalent to 60-watt bulbs have been available for a few years and now cost around $25 each. The problem with making brighter models is that while LEDs produce less heat than regular bulbs, the heat they do create shortens the lifespan and reduces the efficiency of the chips. Cramming a dozen chips together in a tight bulb-shaped package that fits in today's lamps and sockets makes the heat problem worse, and the brighter the bulb, the more heat is produced. LED bulbs have large, finned metal collars to radiate the heat.

This Cheap Computer Monitor Is Your Massive-Screen-Space Deal of the Day

The easiest way to convince your coworkers and colleagues that you're super-productive is to have a ton of screen space. Especially if your 2nd monitor only shows charts, trends, and graphs. When you peel your vision away from your Minority-Report-style screens for a minute, you'll look onto your poor single-screen having friends, and you'll know you're getting twice as much internet in your eyeballs as they are. Here's how I divide my screens up: business on the left, party on the right. More »

Negotiation and Deal Making | orlandobands

Negotiating and deal making?takes place in many different situations and in many different aspects of life. For now, however, I would like to focus on negotiating and deal making within the entertainment industry. There are several techniques and methods that can be used in negotiating. The goal is to know how to use them effectively in those different types of situations and to come to the best mutual agreement possible. This cannot be stressed enough when it comes to entertainment, where cutthroat business is oftentimes heard of.

Rather than taking my word for this, I would like to share a short synopsis of an interview I had with a professional in the music industry. I had the opportunity to meet with Ben Gardner (CEO and founder of Orlandobands.com) the other day and had an excellent, in-depth interview.?Orlandobands.com?is based in Orlando, FL and was generally established around 2003 as a volunteered and seasonal project. In 2008, Ben started to get more serious and pursue the business more heavily. During the interview, I only asked Ben a few questions, but he gave me an abundance of content on negotiating and deal making with venues, bands, and/or clients.
I first asked him to tell me how he went about negotiating and what techniques or methods he used.? Immediately, Ben told me he would run through the process of booking a venue and/or selling a service to a client. He brought up the importance of being prepared. Without being prepared and then going into a negotiation, you are mostly likely to fail. You do this by developing objective criteria that are legitimate and practical. For example, you cannot go to a sponsor and tell them you have a great event planned without having the venue yet. The sponsor is going to want to know where and when the event is, how much it is going to cost them, why they should sponsor the event, and what not. These are things a negotiator needs to bring to the table and be ready to deliver.

From there, Ben likes to ask questions to find out the underlying interests of the other party. By doing so, Ben is able to find merit in their reasoning to reach a mutual agreement. Determining each other?s interests makes for a better negotiation. One tactic that he does use is drafting tentative commitments that each party can agree upon. This is a more gradual process, but it allows for these tentative commitments to be changed within reasoning. It is important to have valid reasons that are relevant to the underlying interests of each party. Without reason, proposals seem positional and parties may become defensive.

This all goes along with good communication?being specific and clear on what your interests are and listening to what the other party?s interests are. For example, Ben mentions how different it is to talk with bands than it is to talk with industry professionals, or just amateurs and professionals in general. Understanding the character, values, and competence level of your negotiating party must be considered. If you are negotiating with an amateur, they may not know certain terminology or industry standards. More reasoning and objective criteria may be needed. If you were negotiating with a seasoned professional, you may not have to explain everything so much in detail. Either way, proposals should be specific and clear.

We all know that negotiations do not always go as well as we would like them to. We are humans and we have emotions. The important concept to keep in mind here is to separate the people from the problem. I asked Ben if he has had these encounters and how he dealt with them. He said that you have to keep your emotions under control. Things will go wrong and frustrations will come about, but it does not pay to get out of hand and start attacking the people involved. Focus on the problem at hand. An example scenario could be walking into a venue, realizing that their sound system is blown, and having to find one within 2 hours; the band members have not shown up yet; the crew members are running late; and everything else just seems to be going wrong. Ben says this type of scenario happens quite often, and yes, he does get upset and fast paced, but he keeps his emotions in check. Starting to blame others and attack them verbally will only make matters worse. Be soft on the people and hard on the problem. With separation, the problem at hand can be resolved more effectively, if not efficiently.

In light of all this, I asked Ben what his BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) would be. Basically, this would be asking, ?What would happen if no agreement is reached?? In Ben?s case, and I am sure in many business situations, the BATNA would be to contact an attorney or go to litigation. However, the BATNA can be costly and more time consuming. And in essence, it may just end up not being worth the trouble. So, coming to a mutual agreement in the first place is more beneficial.

I want to thank Ben for his time and giving me his insight on negotiating practices. I personally admire the way he handles business and treats his clients, staff, and other industry professionals. He is versed well in negotiation and deal making, and brings credibility to how genuine businesses should be run. Keeping peace between parties is one of the main goals in negotiations. I hope that the techniques and methods that Ben has shared and were presented have helped any of you, as it has for me.

Being an entrepreneur at heart, I have found that my place resides within the business industry--particularly entertainment, real estate, and health. I am always open to new opportunities and learning experiences. I am a very self-driven individual who likes to set goals and achieve them. I strive for success, but realize that with success also comes failure. Great leaders are those who learn quickly and most effectively from their mistakes. I tend to be a perfectionist but have found that there are differences between perfectionism and excellence, so effectively maintaining a balance between these two is key.

Veteran IT consultant sets out on new venture | Reseller News New ...

By Simon Eskow, Auckland | Monday, 12 November 2012
Janke van der Vyver, a co-founder of Enterprise IT and former solutions specialist with Lexel, has started his own consulting business.

The company, based in Albany, is setting out to do corporate IT, along with bringing niche products in facilities systems convergence, security and power continuity.

?We?re doing corporate IT, but also a couple of other things I enjoy as well,? says van der Vyver. ?It?s dealing with facilities, building management systems and the like.?

The company is targeting enterprise businesses, allowing van der Vyver to leverage his years of making connections, and will be abetted by the notion of ?reverse engineering? solutions to a customer?s business needs.
?What we?re doing is going to a business with an idea and saying if you combine these business elements over here with those business elements over there you can change the way you go to market and your business model. You can give yourself a differentiator, you can get a better result at a lower cost,? says van der Vyver. ?If you?re actually reverse engineering, everything else just follows, I never sell anything: sales happen.?

On its website, iVise outlines a seven step, ?fast-cycle? approach to reverse engineering from the desired outcome back to the proposed solution.

?I do this at a leadership level, effectively asking the business owners where they want to take their business and the technology components happen,? says van der Vyver. ?So often CXOs feel like technology is a black box they can look in, but it costs a fortune and they can?t get a predictable service level or a predictable cost.?

The company already has a number of clients, van der Vyver says, and he is partnering with companies with specific expertise on projects, while also relying on support from vendors, which include HP, IBM, Dell and others.
?I?ll partner with people in the security and the power continuity and other people in the convergence space,? he says. ?That?s how you get the leverage. I?m also quite excited by my relationship with Dell at the moment. They have lean go to market model where they enable the customer make sure their people process and technologies is appropriate to support the solution over the life of the solution, with training and networking.?

The company has its first employee, Bruce Busbridge, another IT veteran in the New Zealand market, as iVise?s account manager. Busbridge has worked for Compaq, and IBM. And although he is starting off small, with a staff of one, van der Vyver says the nature of the work will not call for bringing on a lot more employees.

?I?m not setting out to build a company of consultants at this point,? he says. ?What I am doing is working closely with other specialists in their area people who are specialist in productivity consulting, pure business continuity consulting, pure process improvement, change stuff and human behavioural and someone else will do analytics and BI.?

Van der Vyver came to New Zealand in the late 1990s from South Africa, where he owned an IT company, after his wife became pregnant with their first child.

?We were sort of talking about coming to New Zealand, and being able to have a look, we really liked the place, but we weren't majorly motivated, but when the wife got pregnant that did it,? he says. ?We didn?t want to raise children in South Africa, and we?ve been loving New Zealand ever since.?

Turkey Family Art Project - Hobbies On A Budget

Turkey Family Art Project

turkey 4

It?s almost Thanksgiving. That means it?s time for every kid to create a Thanksgiving turkey. My son?s kindergarten class is no exception. He brought home his turkey family art project a few weeks ago for us to transform from a white piece of poster board into a turkey masterpiece. This is our 3rd Family Art Project of the year. We?ve made an Angry Bird Apple, a Halloween Pumpkin and now the Thanksgiving turkey! These are so much fun.

Turkey Family Art Project

We tried to come up with a really original, creative turkey idea for this family art project. But all turkeys need feathers ? so feathers it is! But since my family loves the University of Kentucky Wildcats, we decided this turkey needed a UK ball cap and a basketball! We thought about using the crinkled, shredded paper for the body, but once we started working my son didn?t like that idea at all.

We gathered our supplies:

Craft Foam
Turkey shape on poster board
Elmers Rubber cement
googly eyes
feathers
hot glue glun
scissors

I traced the shape of the turkey?s head and neck and let Luke start cutting.

Gluing on the feathers was easier with hot glue than rubber cement! All that was missing was the basketball and UK hat!

This Turkey Family Art Project was done and ready to help set the stage for Thanksgiving fun on the Kindergarten hall!

What?s your favorite way to make a turkey craft for Halloween? My friend

The Walking Dead, Season 3

The Walking Dead, Season 3. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)

Russell Kaye/AMC.

In?Slate's?Walking Dead?TV Club, Chris Kirk will IM each week with a different fan of The Walking Dead. This week, he discusses ?Say the Word? with Rachael Larimore,?Slate?s managing editor.

Chris: OK. Time to relax after last week?s bloodbath. Open to the Governor combing his daughter?s hair. Oh, wait ? she?s a zombie. Of course she is.

Rachael: We closed the last episode with Lori sacrificing herself so her baby might live, and now we have the Governor keeping his daughter ?alive.? People will act in irrational ways for the love of their children.

Chris: But the Governor has more than love. He has an obsession. Michonne finds his journal and opens it up to a list of names, with his daughter?s name underlined and followed by pages upon pages of meticulously drawn slashes.

Rachael: The slashes mystified me. There are too many for it to be a tally of the days since Penny turned, right? There must have been thousands.

Chris: Maybe they don?t express anything but his madness. Somehow they?re just as disturbing as the zombie heads and the zombie daughter. Zombie heads could be trophies, and our attachments lead us to do crazy things, like keeping zombies in a barn. But the slashes just confirm that something is seriously off with him.

Rachael: I figure the Governor?s daughter explains all the "research? that Milton, his scientific advisor, is conducting. He's looking for a cure, right?

Chris: Possibly. If that's true, though, the Governor doesn't find it particularly pressing. As Michonne eavesdrops, Milton, the Governor?s scientific advisor, asks the Governor to postpone a village-wide party to save power for an experiment he?s conducting, but the Governor refuses.

Rachael: True ... the Governor is crazy AND mysterious.

Chris: But I get where he's coming from. Maybe he thinks a cure (if that?s what Milton is working on) is a long shot. Plus, preserving Woodbury?s morale is important.

Rachael: Keeping morale up is one thing. Staging Zombie Apocalypse MMA Gladiator fights is quite another.

Chris: The Governor says the sport, which involves Merle going mano-a-mano with another villager in an arena ringed by de-toothed zombies, is meant to desensitize the villagers. Is that enough of an explanation? As crazy as this sport appears to be, should Andrea skip town?

Rachael: Not really. I get the Governor's explanation. The matches are symbolic: The zombies are on the fringes, but as long as you stay in Woodbury, the Governor will keep you safe.

Chris: That?s not what Michonne thinks. After a coarse exchange with Andrea, Michonne returns to the road alone. I don?t blame Andrea for staying, though. Michonne wasn't?giving her enough to go on.

Rachael: A sense of security, however tentative, is a powerful thing. But maybe Andrea will carry on Michonne's work and figure out what is really going on. I am terrible at predictions, but my hunch is that as the season draws to a close, things in Woodbury will start to fall apart. Andrea will be in danger. And Michonne will heroically return and save the day. Or, she could get eaten by a zombie next week.

Chris: Speaking of zombie meals, let?s talk about the prison, where the show continues right where it left off last week. Megan?s clutching the baby that she just cut out of Lori. Rick is shell-shocked. T-Dogg is dead and everyone believes Carol is also dead. Without missing a beat, though, Daryl starts assigning orders and does what needs to be done next, which is to find the baby some food.

Rachael: Daryl is going to have to be the de-facto leader until Rick overcomes his grief. it's a role that he's generally resisted, but their numbers are such that he really has no choice. His brother Merle is not going to be happy about his Daryl?s new individuality when the two are reunited.

Chris: The show couldn?t possibly kill off more characters in this episode. Still, I found myself waiting to see a horde of zombie children to swarm Daryl when he and Maggie went to get the baby formula in an abandoned preschool. Even when the characters aren?t practically swimming in guts, this show knows how to be edgy.

Rachael: I really thought they would spare us zombie kids, and they did. The formula find offered a much-needed glimmer of hope, but it couldn't be completely uplifting, since Daryl and Maggie were surrounded by reminders of once-happy and normal children who are now surely dead. It put everything in perspective.

Chris: Meanwhile, Rick goes off the deep end and dives axe-first into the prison. Glenn goes in to fetch him, but Rick shoves him off. After what appears to be hours, Rick finds the boiler room where Lori died.

Rachael: If you're still with the show after all these hundreds of heads cut off and people being eaten alive, you're got a pretty strong stomach. But when Rick discovers the very-sated zombie with the bulging stomach, and then took Carl's knife ... I couldn't watch. You know what I'm saying?

Chris: It was nauseating. I don?t know what he was thinking. Scoop Lori?s remains out of the zombie for a proper burial? Fortunately after a few stabs Rick appears to abandon the idea. Then, the final moment of the episode: a nearby landline rings. Rick picks it up and breathes, ?Hello?? Who will be at the other line next week? Shane?s ghost, come to haunt Rick for failing to protect Lori?

Rachael: I have no idea. Could it be someone from Woodbury, and this is how Rick's crew will find its way to back to Andrea and Merle? That seems too pat and convenient, so I hope I'm wrong.

Chris: Or maybe it's Carol? She's got to find her way back somehow, assuming she's still alive. In any case, what?s your impression of this season so far?

Rachael: While I understood the Carl-Shane tension last season, I was also annoyed by it. (C'mon people. Bigger picture here! You're battling zombies, stick together.) I feel like the show is hitting its stride in this season.

Chris: The two plots are working well together. While Rick?s group clings to edge of survival, you see Woodbury, where people are much more comfortable but have their own set of problems, only one of which is their crazy leader.

Rachael: Now we wait to see who is on the other end of the phone!

Chris: ?Seven days.? :click:
