1st female Iraq war resister to be court martialed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? The first female soldier to flee the U.S. military for Canada to avoid the Iraq war is to be court-martialed Monday.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/12wpci6 ) Pfc. Kimberly Rivera is charged with desertion and faces up to five years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted.

Rivera was assigned to Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Colorado and served in Iraq in 2006. She says she became disillusioned with the mission.

While on a two-week leave in the U.S. in 2007, she crossed the Canadian border after she was ordered to serve another tour in Iraq. Rivera applied for permanent residency, but Canadian immigration officials ordered the mother of four to leave the country or face deportation.

She was arrested last year at the U.S. border.

"Ugly stuff" may emerge in Jackson wrongful death trial

By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An attorney for the concert promotion company AEG Live warned jurors they would see a very different view of the charismatic Michael Jackson as the company seeks to prove it was not liable for the pop star's death.

Marvin Putnam, making his opening statement in what is expected to be an emotional wrongful death trial, said AEG officials had no idea that Jackson was taking the surgical anesthetic that led to his death.

He said the three-month civil case would bring to light "some ugly stuff" about the singer's private behavior.

"The public Michael Jackson was very different from the private Michael Jackson," Putnam said. "He erected a wall between himself and his family. Even his family wasn't sure what was going on at the house. He kept those who might have been able help him at a distance."

He said Jackson had been using the powerful anesthetic propofol for years to help him sleep "and almost no one knew."

"AEG, like everyone else, was an outsider," Putnam said. "They had no idea. It was going on behind locked doors."

The "Thriller" singer's mother, Katherine, is suing privately held AEG Live, promoters of a never-realized series of comeback concerts by Jackson, for negligence in hiring Dr. Conrad Murray as his personal physician.

Murray, convicted in 2011 for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson with a propofol overdose, was caring for the singer as he rehearsed in Los Angeles for a series of 50 "This is It" shows in London in 2009.

Brian Panish, representing Jackson's family, said AEG Live ignored red flags when it hired Murray and should have been aware that the singer had addiction problems years before he agreed to perform the concerts.

Jackson, 50, drowning in debt and seeking to rebuild a reputation damaged by his 2005 trial and acquittal on child molestation charges, died in Los Angeles in June 2009.

In his opening argument, Panish said AEG Live failed to do proper background checks on Murray, who asked for $5 million to care for the singer. Background checks would have revealed Murray was in debt and was a cardiologist even though Jackson had no known heart issues, Panish said.

"When a red flag comes up, do you turn away or do you look into it?" Panish said. "AEG ignored the obvious red flags and they hired Dr. Murray."

AEG Live contends that it did not hire or supervise Murray, saying that a proposed contract with him was never executed. The concert promoters also have said they could not have foreseen that Murray posed a danger to Jackson.

"This case is about the choices we make and the personal responsibilities that go with that," Putnam said on Monday.

Katherine Jackson, 82, along with her children Randy and Rebbie, were among family members attending Monday's packed opening of the trial. Jackson's three children, who could be called as witnesses later, were not there.

Panish said Jackson had known problems with prescription drug addiction dating back to use of the painkiller Demerol following a burn injury when he was shooting a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

Jackson in 1993 announced he was canceling a world tour to seek treatment for his painkiller addiction.

In the days before the trial began, Panish denied the Jackson family is seeking $40 billion in damages from AEG Live, as some media had reported this month.

The final amount will be determined by the jury should it hold AEG Live liable for negligence.

A handful of Jackson fans gathered outside the court, saying they were hoping for justice for the "King of Pop."

Jackson fan Julia Thomas, 40, an office worker from Colton, California, said she hoped the trial would demonstrate what she said were the wrongs AEG Live committed against Jackson.

"They're about to be exposed because they bullied Michael, they stressed him into the grave to the point that he needed sedatives to sleep," Thomas told Reuters. (Editing by Jill Serjeant, Andrew Hay, David Gregorio and Bill Trott)

2 policemen shot in Rome as Italy gets new govt

ROME (AP) ? An unemployed bricklayer shot two Italian policemen in a crowded square outside the premier's office Sunday just as the nation's new government was being sworn in, investigators said.

The gunman's intended target was politicians, a top Italian official said after interviewing him.

Mired in recession and suffering from soaring unemployment, Italy has been in political paralysis since an inconclusive February election. Social and political tensions have been running high among voters divided between center-left, conservative and anti-government political parties.

Sunday was supposed to be a hopeful day when debt-ridden Italy finally got new government to solve its many problems. But shots rang out in Colonna Square near a busy shopping and strolling area shortly after 11:30 a.m. just as Premier Enrico Letta and his new ministers were taking their oaths at the Quirinal presidential office about a kilometer (half mile) away.

The suspected gunman, dressed in a dark business suit, was immediately grabbed by other police outside Chigi Palace, which houses the premier's office and other government offices. The politicians were supposed to have met at the palace later Sunday for their first Cabinet meeting.

Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani told reporters he had questioned the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital with bruises after being wrestled to the ground. He identified the man as Luigi Preiti, 49, from Calabria, a southern agricultural area plagued by organized crime and chronic unemployment.

Laviani said Preiti had "confessed everything" and didn't appear mentally unbalanced.

"He is a man full of problems, who lost his job, who lost everything," the prosecutor said. "He was desperate. In general, he wanted to shoot at politicians, but given that he couldn't reach any, he shot at the Carabinieri" paramilitary police.

One of the policemen, shot in the neck, was in critical condition. The other, shot in the leg, suffered a fracture, doctors said.

The shooting "was the tragic gesture of a 49-year-old unemployed man," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told reporters after briefing Letta and his new Cabinet.

A woman passing by during the shooting was slightly injured, Rome's mayor said. It was unclear if she was grazed by a bullet or hurt in the panic sparked by the gunfire.

The 46-year-old Letta had nailed down a coalition deal only a day ago between two bitter political enemies ? his center-left forces and the conservative bloc of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi. Letta will speak to Parliament on Monday, laying out his strategy to reduce joblessness while still sticking to the austerity measures needed to keep the eurozone's No. 3 economy from descending into a sovereign debt crisis. He will then face confidence votes.

A video surveillance camera on the Parliament building caught the attacker on film just before and during the shooting, Italian news reports said.

The attacker was walking at a steady pace along a narrow street that leads from the square outside Parliament's lower house to the square outside the premier's office, when police officers appear to have stopped him to ask where he was going.

About 90 minutes later, Letta and his ministers were due to enter Chigi Palace. It was not immediately known if the attacker knew about their arrival.

Shortly after police approached him, he began firing, according to the surveillance camera.

An AP television producer saw the two wounded Carabinieri officers in the square outside the palace. One of them lay on the pavement with blood pouring out of his neck.

Alfano said the alleged gunman wanted to kill himself after the shooting but ran out of bullets. He said six shots were fired in all. The gunman used a semi-automatic pistol whose serial number had been scraped off, Sky TG24 TV said.

The interior minister said security was immediately stepped up near key venues in the Italian capital, but added authorities were not worried about possible related attacks.

"Our initial investigation indicates the incident is due to an isolated gesture, although further investigations are being carried out," he said.

Doctors at Rome's Umberto I Polyclinic said a 50-year-old brigadier had been hit in the neck by a bullet that damaged his spinal column and was lodged near his shoulder. The doctors said it wasn't yet known if the spinal column injury had caused any paralysis.

The head of St. John's Hospital, Gianluigi Bracciale, told Sky TG24 TV the second officer suffered a broken leg from a gunshot. He said Prieti didn't appear to have any injuries other than bruises.

Preiti's uncle, interviewed by Sky, said the alleged gunman had moved back to his parents' home in Calabria because he could no longer find work as a bricklayer. "He was a great worker. He could build a house from top to bottom," said the uncle, Domenco Preiti.

The shooting sparked ugly memories of the 1970s and 1980s in Italy, when domestic terrorism plagued the country during a time of high political tensions between right-wing and left-wing blocs.

The new Cabinet ministers were seen smiling in a group photo as news of the shooting broke.

"The news arrived after the swearing-in," said Dario Franceschini, one of the new ministers.

The ministers were kept briefly inside for security reasons until it was clear there was no immediate danger.

Rome was jammed Sunday with tourists and residents enjoying a warm sunny morning on the last day of a four-day weekend.

Global shares rise on central bank expectations, euro also up

By Richard Hubbard

LONDON (Reuters) - European rose on Monday as investors counted on easy money from central banks in the euro zone and United States to offset the risk of further disappointing global economic data, which still kept commodities under pressure.

The common currency - which fell around 1.3 percent against the dollar last week as some traders priced in a possible interest rate cut - was also higher on expectations that the European Central Bank should not signal more drastic action when it meets this week.

The formation of a new government in Italy at the weekend, ending two months of political stalemate, added to the stronger sentiment with Milan's main stock index, the FTSE MIB <.ftmib>, gaining over 1 percent in early trade.

The broad FTSE Eurofirst <.fteu3> index of top European shares was up 0.4 percent, adding to last week's 3.7 percent gain, while Germany's DAX <.gdaxi> rose 0.6 percent and France's CAC 40 <.fchi> was 1.0 percent Higher.

However, activity across the markets was expected to be light with Japan closed for a holiday, China off until Thursday, and the ECB and U.S. Federal Reserve meeting later in the week.

Speculation is rife that the ECB will cut its main interest rate at its monthly policy meeting on Thursday, given recent weak economic data from across the region.

A Reuters poll of 76 economists showed a narrow majority of 43 expected a rate cut of 25 basis points, taking the ECB's refinancing rate to a record low of 0.50 percent.

"The ECB will probably cut the refi rate 25 basis points, but... this move shouldn't weaken the euro unless the bank drops hints that some more dramatic policy - like a negative deposit rate - is back on the agenda," said Anna Hibinio, a global forex analyst at JPMorgan.

The euro was up 0.35 percent to $1.3080 against a generally weaker dollar, but remained well below a seven-week high of $1.3202 hit on April 16 before traders priced in the rate cut speculation.

The dollar also dropped 0.2 percent to 97.88 yen, below a 4-year high of 99.95 set earlier in April after the Bank of Japan unveiled monetary stimulus plans.

The Fed is widely expected to keep its current pace of bond buying at $85 billion a month when the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee announces its decision at 1815 GMT on Wednesday.

The uncertain outlook for economic growth, especially in the world's two big commodity consumers, the United States and China, kept oil and copper prices under pressure, although gold rose 1 percent as its recovery from recent lows continued.

Brent crude slipped 41 cents to $102.75 a barrel, after making its biggest weekly gain since November last week despite data showing the U.S. economy grew less than expected pace in the first quarter. U.S. oil was down 27 cents at $92.73 a barrel.

Gold futures, which often provide trading cues to cash gold, hit $1,472.20 an ounce before settling at $1,468.90 an ounce, up $15.30. Spot gold rose $6.70 to $1,473 an ounce.

Pat Healy submits Jim Miller at UFC 159, but Bruce Buffer almost announces wrong winner

Jim Miller is 5-foot-8, fights at 155 lbs., and has a bushy red beard. Pat Healy is 5-foot-9, fights at 155 lbs., and sported a trimmed red beard at UFC 159. Can you blame UFC announcer Bruce Buffer for mixing them up?

Healy, who returned to the UFC after spending much of his career in Strikeforce, put Miller to sleep with a rear naked choke in the third round of their thrilling bout. As the two stood on either side of referee Herb Dean to have the fight result announced, Buffer announced the winner by submission was Jim Mill-Pat Healy!

Healy smiled and corrected Buffer, who rarely makes such errors. It was a lighthearted moment that Healy laughed about after a thrilling bout.

Miller started out landing leg kicks and used ground and pound to beat up Healy in the first round. Near the end of the round, Healy was saved by the bell as Miller's ground and pound was close to ending the bout before the horn sounded.

[Also: Two bizarre endings mar UFC 159 prelims]

It was in the third that Healy turned the bout around. Healy weakened Miller with striking, then took him down and took his back. He sunk in the rear naked choke, and Miller's arms went limp. The fight was stopped at 4:02 in the third because Miller was out.

Miller wanted to use the bout to convince UFC president Dana White that he was ready for a title shot. Instead, it was Healy who stood out. In his post-fight interview with UFC commentator, he warned other UFC lightweights to watch out because he was "putting them on blast."

The Online Ads That Are Driving People Crazy

When it comes to annoying online ads and email spam, there?s one type, in particular, that drives people crazy.

While irrelevant ads annoy and turn off customers, no advertisement annoys them more than an irrelevant pop-up ad, according to an eMarketer report. In fact, irrelevant pop-up ads were more annoying than lottery scams, male enhancement ads and scam emails of deceased relatives asking for money. Fifty-eight percent of respondents also say that ads for products they do not need and ads for female enhancement ads were annoying.

Those annoying ads have real consequences for companies. Sixty percent of customers say they will unsubscribe from future emails after being flooded with spam. Respondents also say they will ignore future emails?or leave a website if they receive spam advertisements. And last, respondents say they will also stop using the advertised product, boycott the company or tell their friends about their experiences. ??

[5 Crazy Marketing Gimmicks Gone Horribly Wrong]

Overall, the researchers found that more than 90 percent of Internet users say they have encountered annoying ads online. Though the top source of annoying advertisements is still television, social media and online ads follow close behind. More than 50 percent of Internet users say that email/sidebar ads and websites are the top sources of annoying ads. The researchers found that junk mail and social media?are equal as sources of annoying ads. ?

"While it should be noted that many of the most annoying ad campaigns originated with the least legitimate advertisers, the reality is that all advertisers can suffer as a result of these poorly conceived and executed campaigns," the eMarketer report said. "Thoughtful marketers have to work to make sure their content is getting in front of the right people, and be careful that their messaging does not overwhelm potential customers and alienate them."

The eMarketer report was based on a March 2013 survey from InsightsOne.

Twitter?s Vine video sharing app coming soon to Android

(Reuters) - This year's U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania has attracted a record total of 9,860 entries, the United States Golf Association (USGA) said on Thursday. The number of applicants for the June 13-16 tournament eclipsed the previous best of 9,086 for the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. "The fact that we have a record number of entries, from across the world, is a testament to both the great appeal of the U.S. Open and the historic nature and grandeur of Merion Golf Club," USGA Executive Director Mike Davis said in a statement. US economy likely rebounded in first quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. economic growth likely accelerated from January through March from a near-stall at the end of 2012, propelled by a revival in housing, steady consumer spending and increased stockpiling by businesses.

But the faster growth isn't expected to last. Broad government spending cuts and higher taxes have begun to weigh on the economy, making some consumers and businesses cautious and slowing growth.

Economists predict that the overall economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent in the January-March quarter, according to a survey by FactSet. That would be a significant improvement from the anemic 0.4 percent growth rate reported for the October-December quarter.

A 3.1 percent growth rate would match the robust pace of the July-September quarter last year. Anything stronger than 3.1 percent would be the economy's fastest quarterly growth since late 2011.

The Commerce Department will release the report at 8:30 a.m. EDT Friday.

Many economists say they think growth as measured by the gross domestic product is slowing in the April-June quarter to an annual rate of just 2 percent. Most foresee growth remaining weak before picking up in the fourth quarter.

GDP is the broadest gauge of the economy's health. It measures the total output of goods and services produced in the United States, from haircuts and hamburgers to airplanes and automobiles.

The economy began the year with a big push from the private sector. Steady job gains kept consumers spending. Residential construction rose at the fastest annual pace in nearly five years. And healthy auto sales kept factories bustling.

But now two big decisions in Washington are threatening to slow the economy's momentum.

In March, lawmakers allowed deep across-the-board spending cuts to begin taking effect. The cuts have forced government agencies to furlough workers, reduced spending on key public projects and made businesses more nervous about investing and hiring this year.

The cuts came two months after President Barack Obama and Congress allowed a Social Security tax cut to expire. That left a person earning $50,000 a year with about $1,000 less to spend this year. A household with two high-paid workers has up to $4,500 less.

Consumers' take-home pay is crucial to the economy because their spending drives roughly 70 percent of growth.

Americans appeared to shrug off the tax increase at the start of the year. They boosted spending in January and February, helped by a stronger job market. In part, that's why growth is expected to be solid in the first quarter.

But hiring slowed sharply in March. And consumers cut back their spending at retail businesses, a sign that many were starting to feel the tax increase. Economists expect spending to stay weak in the second quarter as consumers adjust to their smaller paychecks.

Ben Herzon, an economist at Macroeconomics Advisers, said the tax increases could shave roughly 1 percentage point from growth this year. He also expects the government spending cuts to reduce growth by about 0.6 percentage point.

One area where consumers are feeling some relief is at the gas pump. The national average price for a gallon of gas has fallen by 28 cents since Feb. 27, to $3.51. Analysts say prices could fall 20 cents more over the next two months.

Cheaper gas helps the economy because it makes goods less expensive to transport and gives consumers more money to spend on other things. Over the course of a year, a decline of 10 cents a gallon translates to roughly $13 billion in savings at the pump.

Herzon said cheaper gas is helping blunt some of the effect of the Social Security tax increase.

"If not for the recent decline in gas prices, the outlook for the economy would be even worse," Herzon said.

Another bright spot for the economy this year is the housing recovery. Residential construction is expected to add to growth in 2013 for a second straight year.

In March, U.S. builders started work on a seasonally adjusted annual rate of more than 1 million homes. It was the first time it had crossed that threshold in nearly five years.

Sales of newly built and previously occupied homes are up from last year. And prices are rising, a trend that makes homeowners feel wealthier and more likely to spend.

Some of the bounce in first-quarter growth is expected to come from a rebound in defense spending and restocking. Both areas were weak in the fourth quarter and had combined to shave 2.8 percentage points from growth.

But defense spending is likely to languish later this year because of the government cuts. And business stockpiling is expected to weaken again in the April-June quarter, as companies react to slower consumer spending.

Despite the decline, economists say they think consumers will help bolster growth later this year.

Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Gordon College in Massachusetts, said stock market gains and higher home prices are making Americans feel more confident in the economy. And cheaper gas should also help support consumer spending.

"I don't think the drop in gas prices will fully offset the payroll tax increase, but it will buffer it considerably," Bethune said.

Google Brings Its New And Improved File Viewer For MS Office Documents To Chrome Beta

office_viewer_chrome_2If you regularly need to open Microsoft Office documents in the browser, Google now offers you a new Chrome extension that renders Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly in the browser. Currently, these documents open in a Drive-based viewer, but after you install the new Chrome Office Viewer (which is officially still in beta), these documents will open directly in the browser. Until now, this feature was limited to Chromebooks, but now it’s also available for Chrome on Windows and Mac. You do need to run Chrome Beta, however, as it’s not available for the stable release channel of Chrome just yet. The advantage of this new plug-in (which weighs in at over 20 megabytes), Google says, is that it ensures that you are protected from malware because the files open in a specialized sandbox “to impede attackers who use compromised Office files to try to steal private information or monitor your activities.” While Google doesn’t say so in today’s announcement, chances are this new feature is at least partially powered by the technology it acquired when it bought Quickoffice last year. When Google launched the Pixel Chromebook in February, it also said it would port Quickoffice to Chrome, using its Native Client technology. Those three months are almost over, so we’ll likely see a bit more from Google with regard to Office documents in the browser.

Could the Boston Bomber Have Fled From Infrared?

Late last Friday a terrible week that began with the bombing of the Boston Marathon came to a satisfying, if somber, conclusion. The last alleged perpetrator of the horrific events at the marathon and MIT was arrested after a most dangerous game of hide and seek.

To help bring Dzhokhar Tsarneav to justice, officials took advantage of what is usually invisible to us?heat.

Photos (and videos) like these highlight just how far detective technology has come. Specifically, Tsarneav was indentified with the aid of a FLIR (forward-looking infrared) camera mounted to a police helicopter. But how does this apparent X-ray vision work, and is there any way the alleged bomber could have hid from this seemingly all-seeing eye?

What You Don?t See Gives You Away

Infrared (IR) radiation is able to make it through a lot of interference like smoke or fog or a boat tarp because it is composed of long electromagnetic waves. Take a look at the electromagnetic spectrum and you?ll see that infrared has longer waves than visible light (right before?infra, beneath?red light). And as we have all seen from thermal images, it just so happens that heat throws much of its energy across the universe as infrared. In fact, if you heat something up enough, these long infrared wavelengths bunch closer together until some bleeds into the visible spectrum. This is why you can heat something up until it ?glows red.? Keep heating it and it will glow blue, following the same spectrum. (Note that most of the color thermal images have this scale reversed. This is because it is more intuitive to think of redder areas as hotter.)

So when you look at an infrared image, you aren?t actually ?looking through? anything. Infrared is just another kind of electromagnetic radiation that happens to make it through the material your camera is focused on. When police ?looked through? the tarp of the boat Tsarneav was hiding in, they saw him because his body?s output of long wavelengths were making it through the boat tarp material, not some Superman-like X-ray vision.

But because seeing someone or something with infrared requires the radiation to make it through whatever is between it and the camera, there are bound to be materials that effectively block out IR. Slipping behind a material like that makes you invisible to a camera that sees the invisible.

Nowhere to Run, One Place to Hide

Glass, specifically the kind of glass you have in your home, is designed to block infrared radiation. Keeping in all that heat is important for keeping heating bills down. Point an IR camera at most glass and it will seriously distort, if not completely block, any IR radiation coming from behind it. You?ll get the relative surface temperature of the glass and that?s about it.

You can prove this pretty easily. First notice the difference in this video between a car with a window up and a window down in terms of what you can see (the camera is the same FLIR technology used to catch the Boston bomber). Next find a device that puts out near-infrared radiation (shorter wavelengths close to visible light), like your TV remote. The signal it sends is still invisible to you, but I bet you can change the channel through a window. The shorter wavelengths emitted by your remote make it through glass while the FLIR can?t make it past the passenger window. (This is partly why your car gets so unholy hot in the summer; the glass traps the IR radiation!)

If Tsarneav wanted to hide from infrared cameras, he couldn?t have picked a worse spot.

The ideal place to shield your heat signature would be in a glass greenhouse. Surrounded by glass that is designed to reflect heat on all sides, you would be invisible to IR cameras (and Predator). Visible light comes in but IR can?t get out. In fact, this is partly why humans are able to live on this planet. Light from the Sun penetrates our atmosphere, heats up the surface, and then that heat attempts to leave. Greenhouse gases reflect the IR down back at Earth, keeping the heat in?the greenhouse effect. By masking yourself in glass and hiding in an envelop of greenhouse gases, a helicopter like the one used in Watertown, Mass., would be blind.

Unless he knew some critical physics, the alleged Boston bomber could have never escaped infrared detection. Of course, knowing how to shield yourself from the seeing eye in the sky has one key disadvantage: putting yourself behind glass puts you squarely back in the visible spectrum. And now he is behind bars.

Town around 'Western White House' now struggling to survive

A Western White House coffee cup in a vacant storefront in Crawford (Holly Bailey/Yahoo News)

CRAWFORD, Texas? As President George W. Bush?s adopted hometown, this used to be the most famous small city in America.

Crawford, located about 25 miles west of Waco, was often the center of the world during the eight years Bush was in the White House.

Bush spent nearly 500 days of his presidency here, where he owns a 1,600-acre ranch just outside of town. He hosted more than a dozen foreign dignitaries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Britain's then-Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as members of Congress.

Bush spent so much time in Crawford that White House aides ordered special signage for when he had to address the dozens of reporters who trailed him here. ?The Western White House,? the sign, which featured the presidential seal, read. ?Crawford, Texas.?

But just as Bush has faded from the public spotlight since he left the White House in 2009 for Dallas, where he now spends most of his time, the town has faded as well.

Within months of Bush?s departure from the White House, several shops on the town?s three-block strip of businesses along Highway 317 closed?including the Yellow Rose, which sold Bush memorabilia along with Texas-themed gifts and art. Other retail shops nearby soon followed.

A few months ago, the Coffee Station, a gas station that also served as Crawford?s only diner and was considered the heart of the city, closed its doors because of slow business. As president, Bush had often made impromptu stops at the diner to grab a cheeseburger, but locals say he hadn?t been seen there in years. The closing has left local civics clubs that used to meet there in the lurch, struggling to find a place to have luncheons.

The business generated by tourists looking to visit Bush?s hometown and from the media and Secret Service who spent weeks at a time camped out near Bush?s ranch when he was in town all but stopped when he left office. The town, home to mostly families who own farms, has struggled to survive.

Indeed, only one shop in town remains open: Red Bull Gifts and Gallery, which sells local crafts and has a section of Bush memorabilia, including coffee cups emblazoned with the logo of ?The Western White House.? But that shop might close within weeks, too?amid expectations that business could get even slower as Bush prepares to open his presidential library this week in Dallas, shifting tourism related to his presidency 120 miles north.

?Things have been really tough. We?re still trying to figure out what we?re going to do,? said Cindy Damon, whose family has owned the Red Bull for 15 years. ?We had hoped the library would end up in Waco at Baylor. It would have really helped, but that didn?t happen.?

Speaking to Yahoo News last Saturday, Damon said only ?two or three? customers had been in the store that day. Outside, Crawford looked like a ghost town, a major difference from the Bush era, when the sidewalks were often packed with tourists and there were few places to park.

?It was like this before Bush came here,? Damon said, glancing out into the empty street. ?We were just a sleepy quiet town that people drove through to get to somewhere else.?

That changed when Bush bought the ranch in 1999. At the time he was a governor running for president and, initially, residents cringed at how a celebrity in their midst might affect traffic and their way of life. But when Bush began spending weeks at a time in Crawford, the town was suddenly enjoying a financial boom. Empty storefronts were transformed into retail shops. A new bank opened. There were more people on the street than anybody could remember in this tiny town of 700 people.

It wasn?t always media or tourists: During the summer of 2005, hundreds of anti-war activists planted themselves in Crawford, protesting Bush?s handling of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soon, they opened their own storefront, vowing to remain there in protest of the Western White House until the troops were called home from the wars. But they left town, too?well before Bush left office.

Local officials in Crawford have been trying to attract new business to fill their empty storefronts, while at the same time keeping families who have lived here all their lives from moving away, according to Brent Myer, who has been serving as Crawford?s interim mayor since November. Myer, who landed his job when the old mayor moved out of town, says Crawford has struggled because ?we?re off the beaten path.?

?What we are is a good bedroom community. We have good schools and good churches,? Myer said. ?As far as traffic goes, we don?t get much, and it?s hard for our businesses to compete with stores like Walmart ? in other cities.?

Still, things could be worse, locals say. Just after Bush left the White House, a rumor circulated through town the former president might sell the ranch?a rumor that ceased only after Laura Bush made an impromptu visit to the Coffee Station, where she told locals it wasn?t true.

Still, George Bush isn?t spotted very often around these parts, and locals know when he?s in town. While he no longer flies to the ranch in a helicopter as he did when he was president, residents say they are tipped off by the arrival of Secret Service agents a few days before Bush visits and by an unofficial motorcade of black SUVs.

?He?s usually here around the holidays, Easter and Thanksgiving,? Damon said. ?But now that Jenna has had her baby, we?re all wondering if he will just spend time where she is or just stay in Dallas.?

Asked what she thinks will happen to the town if her shop closes, too, Damon says she doesn?t know.

?It?s sad,? she said. ?It picked up so much that we really had hope that it might stay that way. ? But Crawford has always been a quiet town, and that?s what it is again without Bush. I am sort of aggravated about it. I wish it were a little bit more exciting, but it?s the way it is here.?

Windows RT and Server 2012 updates mentioned in recent 8.1 leak

Windows RT and Server 2012 updates

Windows Blue, Windows 8.1, Windows 8 SP1... whatever Microsoft wants to call it, it's coming soon. And along with it there will be updates to its RT and Server products too. References to Windows RT 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2 were found buried in a DLL of a leaked build of Blue. (Build number 9374, to be specific.) The mentions turned up in basebrd.dll.mui, if you're wondering what file to start rifling through. Don't get too excited, though: there's basically no info to glean other than their existence -- which is no surprise at all. Hopefully all of the much whispered about updates will arrive sooner, rather than later, and pack a few tweaks that will make the Microsoft faithful feel a little bit more at home.

ARM sees 44 percent profit increase in Q1 2013, ships 2.6 billion ARM-based chips

ARM has had a great quarter -- again. This time it's seen pre-tax profits soar 44 percent, while revenues are up 26 percent (to $209.4 million) since the same period last year. The company's thanking the continued adoption of its low-power chip designs, encompassing smartphones, mobile computing and even digital TVs and wearable tech. The advanced tech within its ARMv8, Mali and big.LITTLE ranges has meant the company can command higher royalties per chip.

In total, 2.6 billion ARM-based chips have made their way into the gadgets this quarter, an increase of 35 percent year-on-year, with embedded hardware up a hefty 50 percent since Q1 2012. It's seen even better performance from its Mali graphics processor shipments, which are up five times since the same period last year. As outgoing CEO Warren East notes: "Even low cost smart devices can contain multiple ARM-based chips and be based on ARM's advanced Cortex-A series technology and Mali graphics processors." With new friends on board for the near-future, the good times are likely to continue.

What really is a vampire?

I find that vampires are extremely complicated, and everyone like you said has an opinion on what they should or shouldn't be.

Me personally? I detest Twilight (didn't like 30 Days of Night either), and adore finding new and creative ways to skewer it in my Mythical Crimes Unit writings. However I have yet to have a vampire explode into a pile of herpes ridden glitter and be allowed to use the phrase "clean up on aisle 13." :(

But in all seriousness it's a good question to ask because here on RPG everyone has a different idea of what a vampire is. On Yahoo when there were user rooms I remember a group of players running around with something called a "golden vampire", I never really got to ask what their particular stuff was based on though. It seemed interesting though. The versions I tend to use for play are based heavily on old world myths, with a dose of Bram Stoker's Dracula because that seems to be what is most familiar to people.

'What's going on?": America hit by wave of tragedies

Moment after nail-biting moment, the events shoved us through a week that felt like an unremitting series of tragedies: Deadly bombs. Poison letters. A town shattered by a colossal explosion. A violent manhunt that paralyzed a major city, emptying streets of people and filling them with heavily armed police and piercing sirens.

Amid the chaos came an emotional Senate gun control vote that inflamed American divisions and evoked memories of the Newtown massacre. And through it all, torrential rain pushed the Mississippi River toward flood levels.

"All in all it's been a tough week," President Barack Obama said Friday night. "But we've seen the character of our country once more."

America was rocked this week, in rare and frightening ways. We are only beginning to make sense of a series of events that moved so fast, so furiously as to almost defy attempts to figure them out. But beneath the pain, as the weekend arrived, horror was counteracted by hope.

"We inhabit a mysterious world," Rev. Roberto Miranda said at a prayer service for the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people, inflicted life-changing injuries on scores more and shook the sense of security that has slowly returned to America since 9/11.

"The dilemma of evil is that even as it carries out its dark, sinister work," Miranda said, "it always ends up strengthening good."

That evil arrived Monday when twin bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon. Not since 9/11 had terror struck so close to home. Although the scale of the Boston attack was far smaller than the destruction of the World Trade Center, a dozen years' worth of modern media evolution made it reverberate in inescapable ways.

In 2001, we could walk away from our televisions. In 2013, bad news follows us everywhere. It's on our computers at work and home, on our phones when we call our loved ones, on social media when we talk to our friends.

"There's no place to run, no place to hide," said Dr. Stuart Fischoff, a professor of media psychology at California State University in Los Angeles. "It's like perpetual shock. There's no off button. That's relatively unprecedented. We're going to have to pay the price for that."

"We're dealing with future shock on a daily basis," Fischoff said.

Steffen Kaplan, a social media specialist in New Jersey, tried his best to protect his young son from the madness. His television stayed off. He browsed the Internet with caution. But reality finally intruded at a local pizzeria, where a TV was playing images of the injured in Boston.

"What's going on?" his son asked. "Nothing," Kaplan replied. "That's just a movie."

Kaplan fears the world his son will inherit. To cope, "I rely on faith in humanity," he said. "If we raise our children correctly, somehow, some way, humanity will prevail."

But the present remains difficult, Kaplan said: "It seems to be a spiral of things happening one after the other. It can be inundating on your senses."

The downward spiral steepened Tuesday morning. As authorities in Boston searched for leads, and the nation debated whether the perpetrators were terrorism or a different type of killer, congressional leaders said a letter containing the poison ricin had been mailed to Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi. It touched off memories of the jumbled days after 9/11, when letters containing anthrax were sent to politicians and media organizations..

On Wednesday, the Secret Service said it had intercepted a ricin letter mailed to President Barack Obama. Tensions immediately rose in Washington, with a half-dozen suspicious packages reported and parts of the Capitol complex shut down. On Wednesday evening, a suspect was arrested in Mississippi.

"I think it's fair to say this entire week we've been in pretty direct confrontation with evil," Secretary of State John Kerry said.

All this happened as the Senate, with high feelings on both sides, voted down legislation that would have banned assault weapons and expanded background checks of gun buyers. The measures, sought for decades, only became possible after 20 children and six others were gunned down at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The defeat of the bill "brought the whole Sandy Hook thing up again," said Rachel Allen, a lawyer from suburban Pittsburgh.

"There are so many senseless things that go on, and you see how people can come together," Allen said Friday. She recalled being moved to tears watching the first Boston Bruins hockey game after the bombing, when the national anthem singer fell silent and let the entire arena roar the song to a finish.

Events in Washington can magnify the sense of chaos, says Fischoff, the psychologist. "Most of our institutions that we use to stabilize ourselves and our country are damaged, crippled," he said. "What you're having is a kind of emotional, cognitive anarchy."

Late Wednesday night, reports emerged of an explosion outside Waco, Texas. As Thursday dawned, the magnitude became clear: A fertilizer plant had blown up with such force, it registered as an earthquake and wrecked homes, apartments, a school and a nursing home. As of Saturday morning, 14 people were dead.

"Is this week feeling a little apocalyptic to anyone else?" tweeted Jessica Coen, editor in chief of the Jezebel.com blog. "Boston. Poison. Explosions. Floods. Tomorrow, locusts."

Recent Aprils have often been cruel to America. In 1993, dozens died in the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. In 1995, a domestic terrorist killed 168 people in the Oklahoma City federal building bombing. In 1999, two students killed 12 classmates, a teacher and themselves at Columbine High School. In 2007, a student rampage left 32 innocents dead at Virginia Tech.

But April 2013's convergence of events is extremely rare, statisticians say.

Such calculations are based on the likelihood of each individual tragedy, said Michael Baron, a professor of statistics at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Baron has no actual data on how often this week's events have separately occurred throughout history. But he estimated that if a terrorist attack occurs once every four years, a suspicious mailing once per year and an industrial accident twice per year, there is a .000004 probability of them all happening in the same week ? "once in 4,808 years."

Such absurd odds were too much for the satirical publication The Onion to resist.

The Onion "report" offered this "quote": "'Maybe next time we have a week, they can try not to pack it completely to the (expletive) brim with explosions, mutilations, death, manhunts, lies, weeping, and the utter uselessness of our political system,' said basically every person in America who isn't comatose or a complete sociopath.'"

The week was no joke for Mary Helen Gillespie, a bank vice president who lives near Boston. When she saw news of the Texas explosion, "I got sick to my gut."

"If we were to look at a map of the United States right now ? our country is strong and proud and brave and we will win. But if you look at a map, we are bleeding," Gillespie said.

"The world is upside down," she said. "Facebook can't keep up with it, TV can't keep up with it. It's just overwhelming."

"What I found was hope in prayer," Gillespie said. "The more the media started reporting on the stories of hope, the heroes, the first responders, the everyday Americans going out trying to save others. That was my inspiration. It was, OK, this will get better."

While authorities tried to determine Thursday how many had died in the fertilizer plant explosion ? many victims were feared to be first responders who rushed into the inferno ? the FBI released photos and videos of two suspects in the marathon attack.

"It's been a rough week for the country," said House Majority Leader John Boehner. "It's been a rough week, but we're thankful for the blessings of life and the opportunity to live in a country whose people always look out for each other."

Finally, on Friday morning, the nation awoke to news that one suspect and a police officer had been killed ? after the suspects hurled explosives during a car chase and had a shootout in the residential community of Watertown.

In Chicago, the cover of the Redeye newspaper on Friday was a giant red RESET button. "That was a rough one. Who's ready for next week?" the caption said.

Jesse Bonelli, a video game artist who lives in locked-down Watertown, stayed inside his house Friday and sharpened a machete ? just in case.

"It's something I usually keep hanging on the wall, but it's the only weapon I have," he said. "I want to be ready in case anyone bursts into the house. After everything that happened this week, I keep wondering what's next."

All day Friday, Boston was shut down, public transit halted and people ordered to stay in their homes as thousands of police and federal agents chased down the fugitive.

He was finally captured on Friday night.

"God has not forsaken Boston. God has not forsaken our nation," Rev. Miranda had said a few days earlier, at the prayer service. "He merely weaves a beautiful bright tapestry of goodness that includes a few dark strands."
