What really is a vampire?

I find that vampires are extremely complicated, and everyone like you said has an opinion on what they should or shouldn't be.

Me personally? I detest Twilight (didn't like 30 Days of Night either), and adore finding new and creative ways to skewer it in my Mythical Crimes Unit writings. However I have yet to have a vampire explode into a pile of herpes ridden glitter and be allowed to use the phrase "clean up on aisle 13." :(

But in all seriousness it's a good question to ask because here on RPG everyone has a different idea of what a vampire is. On Yahoo when there were user rooms I remember a group of players running around with something called a "golden vampire", I never really got to ask what their particular stuff was based on though. It seemed interesting though. The versions I tend to use for play are based heavily on old world myths, with a dose of Bram Stoker's Dracula because that seems to be what is most familiar to people.
