Find out where people are talking about your business online: 10 ...

People talking about your business graphic design blender

Even though you can?t physically hear the chatter, people are talking about your business in a way that the whole world can hear.

The internet gives a new meaning to reputation management now that millions of users can find information, reviews and opinions about your company online. With some smart tools, you can monitor your company?s online reputation ? and help protect it ? by knowing where people are talking about you.

Places Where People Are Talking about Your Business

1. Personal social networking sites. With the ability to check in, link a comment to your company?s social media account and practice freedom of speech, users can tell their whole social network what they love or loathe about a business.

2. Professional networking sites. Such sites allow you to create a professional profile and tell the world about your business. Those who are connected to your network can post reviews about you or your enterprise.

3. Business review sites. Sites like Yelp, Google Places, Yellow Pages and others allow registered users to write reviews about their experiences with your business. If you have a physical location, users can ?check in? to let their followers know where they are as well as leave a quick tip about your business.

4. Job and resume sites. Such websites let registered users to write testimonials about their experiences as an employee at a business, which can give others insight into how things work behind the scenes.

5. Real-time information networks. Twitter and other sites that allow users to write short bursts of information also help them connect with businesses. This permits you as an entrepreneur to gather market intelligence and feedback in real time; build relationships with actual and potential customers; and connect with industry influencers.

6. School- and reunion-related sites. When old friends reunite, they often ask about each other?s professional lives in order to find common ground. These reunion-oriented sites allow people to do so virtually.

7. Corporate sites. Your business may be the latest scoop for sites like FastCompany, BusinessWeek and Crunchbase. If your business does something newsworthy (good or bad), it can end up as a story.

8. Virtual pin boards and photo-sharing sites. The popularity of sites like Pinterest, Springpad and Tumblr give others a glimpse of your business via an image from your site or a user-submitted photo.

9. Industry blogs. Like corporate websites, industry blogs report about up-and-coming businesses and teachable moments. If your business does something noteworthy, it may receive a mention.

10. Your blog. If your company?s blog has a strong following, readers will add comments to your posts. With the integration of sharing buttons, your site?s followers can share your content within their own networks.

(PS: Comment and tell us which one(s) we left out.)

Monitoring Your Online Reputation

It?s impossible to control what others say about your business on the internet.

What you can control are the actions you take after you listen in on the chatter.

Perform an internet search of your company?s name to see what pops up in the search engine ? this is what your customers see when they look you up.

To know when someone mentions your business, you can create an internet search alert (with Google or Yahoo) or make a custom feed that automatically notifies you when your company?s name or other keywords are mentioned.

Managing Your Reputation

Managing conversations about your business can be tricky.

First, claim your business on local search sites and review sites so you have more control over your listings.

Then review the comments about your business without taking the feedback personally.

Respond to complaints with polite private messages that request more information so you can work on making positive changes.

Then use the various social networks and their tools to promote your good name.

People all over the world are talking about your business. Do you know what they?re saying?

Over to you

Where else are people talking about your business? Leave a comment and let us know what we left out!

British Airways considers American Airlines stake

NEW YORK (AP) ? British Airways' parent company International Airlines Group says that it has signed a non-disclosure agreement with American Airlines, allowing it to look at the company's books.

Foreign investors are prohibited from owning more than 25 percent of a U.S. airline. The two airlines already have a joint business agreement for flights across the Atlantic Ocean and were founding members of the OneWorld frequent flier alliance.

Earlier on Friday US Airways and American's parent, AMR Corp., announced that the two airlines had signed similar agreements, moving them one step closer to a potential merger.

AMR Corp. entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29, 2011. American Airlines CEO Tom Horton has said his airline is weighing several options, including remaining independent or merging with one of several airlines.

Now May Be a Good Time to EvaluateYour Ethics Training Initiatives ...

Why? Because ethics is the spiritual glue that holds your organization together. An organization?s ethics determines its character, its health and ultimately, its success. An organization?s values---what it stands for, what your people believe?are crucial to your competitive process. Indeed, values drive the business. Ethics must be brought to center stage.

You and I know this, yet the process of stepping back and taking a good hard look at how things are going, needs to happen more than we think.

To help with the analysis of where you are and where you may want to go in this endeavor, here?s a checklist to help you.

1. Examine your code of ethics (not code of conduct), i.e. how long ago was it written, who wrote it, who had input in its development and if it is older than three years, re-examine how relevant it is.

2. Is your code of ethics stated negatively or positively?

3. Has your ethics training been varied, customized, applicable, and ongoing? If not, why not? If so, how are you measuring it?

4. If your training budget was not a issue, what other options for training would you like see take place? How often? By whom?

5. Who provides your ethics training and how is it working for your organization?

6. Is your ethics training as important as your compliance training?.i.e a top priority, funded well, and supported by leadership.

7. What needs to be done by the end of the year, to fulfill the goal of ethics training for all employees? How will you accomplish this?

8. If your organization is an international company, how do you approach a global ethics initiative? Is it working?

As you reflect on these questions, please keep in mind that the focus here is on ethics not compliance, in being proactive in your training and being able to track productivity, behavior and morale to that same training.

The compliance/ethics groups on Linkedin, I have found, are a vast ocean of experience, training and wisdom that each of us can tap into when the need arises. Use these eight questions as a springboard for further analysis and further ideas for training and then when you identify a need, a lapse, etc. and don?t know where to get further information, ask your colleagues for help with ideas, resources and research.

NASA Launches Twin Probes to Study Earth's Radiation Belts

Want to stay on top of all the space news? Follow @universetoday on Twitter

After nearly a week of weather and technical delays, NASA?s Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) launched in the early morning skies from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 4:05a.m. EDT (08:05 GMT) on Thursday, August 30, 2012. This will be the first twin-spacecraft mission designed to explore our planet?s radiation belts.

?Scientists will learn in unprecedented detail how the radiation belts are populated with charged particles, what causes them to change and how these processes affect the upper reaches of the atmosphere around Earth,? said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington. ?The information collected from these probes will benefit the public by allowing us to better protect our satellites and understand how space weather affects communications and technology on Earth.?

The two satellites, launched from an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41, each weigh just under 680 kg (1,500 pounds) and comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts. These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet like donuts and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight

?We have never before sent such comprehensive and high-quality instruments to study high radiation regions of space,? said Barry Mauk, RBSP project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University?s Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md. ?RBSP was crafted to help us learn more about, and ultimately predict, the response of the radiation belts to solar inputs.?

The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

?The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill,? said Richard Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at APL. ?The entire RBSP team, from across every organization, worked together to produce an amazing pair of spacecraft.?

The first RBSP spacecraft separated from the Atlas rocket?s Centaur booster 1 hour, 18 minutes, 52 seconds after launch. The second RBSP spacecraft followed 12 minutes, 14 seconds later.

During the next 60 days, operators will power up all flight systems and science instruments and deploy long antenna booms, two of which are more than 54 yards long. Data about the particles that swirl through the belts, and the fields and waves that transport them, will be gathered by five instrument suites designed and operated by teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark; the University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham; and the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va. The data will be analyzed by scientists across the nation almost immediately.

Fall TV lineup presents positive portrayals of same-sex relationships ...

When the Fall 2012 television season starts up again in a few weeks, viewers will be treated to more prominent same-sex relationships than we've seen in most recent TV seasons. In addition to a number of returning strongholds on shows like Glee, Modern Family, and Grey's Anatomy, this season will introduce two new series with leading characters in same-sex relationships. [UPDATE BELOW: Read GLAAD's new?Network Responsibility Index report.]

The new shows -?The New Normal?and?Partners?- will appear on NBC and CBS, respectively. Ryan Murphy's new series The New Normal tells the story of a male couple who adopts a child from a surrogate mother, while Partners, from the duo who created Will & Grace, focuses on a friendship between a straight, newly engaged man and his gay business partner.

Partners has attracted very little controversy this summer, but The New Normal was at the center of a dust-up this week when KSL-TV, a Utah-based NBC affiliate,?announced that it would not be airing the show, saying, "For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time." The series is about a loving and committed same-sex couple working to adopt a child and begin a family.?

Ellen Barkin, one of the stars of the show,?responded to the controversy at a press conference?earlier today. She said:

Yes, it is [an affiliate's] right to ban something, but I do think it's a form of censorship. I don't understand why a show that I happen to love, like Law and Order: SVU, is in family viewing time. Why that show, that I hope nobody is allowing a 10-year-old to watch, is acceptable but a show about a very loving, committed same sex couple wanting to raise a child, why that is explicit and offensive and rape, murder, child slavery in very graphic detail is not.

KSL-TV's condemnation of the series as "inappropriate" implies that it is unnatural or wrong for two men in a committed same-sex relationship to raise a child together. This idea that gay and lesbian people are "inappropriate" parents has been disproven by?30 years of scientific research?that finds that the children of gay and lesbian couples grow up to be just as successful as the children of different-sex couples. There are two million children being raised by one million gay parents in the United States, and the only thing that would make their lives smoother would be if their parents did not have to face legal discrimination, including being denied the freedom to marry.

KSL-TV's decision to ban The New Normal promotes an unfounded, unnecessary fear of families headed by same-sex couples. You can?sign a petition at Change.org?asking KSL-TV to reverse its decision?HERE.?

The characters on The New Normal and Partners join a host of same-sex couples - Grey's Anatomy's Callie and Arizona, who married last season; Glee's Santana-Brittany and Kurt-Blaine romances; and Modern Family's Mitchell and Cameron, who nearly adopted a second child in May's season finale - in the fall lineup. These relationships, while fictional, provide important representations of the love and commitment that everyday same-sex couples share. Millions of viewers - including viewers who may not yet support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples - are watching these TV shows and learning that same-sex couples often want the same thing that different-sex couples want: the freedom to marry the person they love.?

We understand that the portrayal of same-sex couples on television is far from perfect - very few gay or lesbian characters are people of color, for example - but every time a network television series features a same-sex couple discussing their love, affection, and dedication to each other, it's a step forward in showing that these kinds of relationships don't hurt communities - they strengthen and enrich them.?

Check out the most recent?"Where We Are On TV" Report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) HERE?to learn more about the importance of positive media representation of gay and lesbian people and relationships.?

UPDATE: GLAAD's latest Network Responsibility Index was published today, August 30.?Read the entire report here (PDF).?

Journalist arrested in UK computer hacking probe

LONDON (AP) ? British police investigating computer hacking and privacy offenses arrested a journalist Wednesday at his home.

The 28-year-old man was being questioned at a London police station for alleged hacking related to the identification of an anonymous blogger in 2009. He is also suspected of perverting the course of justice, police said.

Police did not identify the journalist by name, but the Press Association said he was Patrick Foster, a former reporter at The Times. The British news agency didn't cite a source when identifying Foster.

The journalist was the 11th person arrested by detectives from Operation Tuleta, one of three parallel police investigations triggered by the phone-hacking scandal that has rocked Britain and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. media empire.

More than 40 people have been arrested in the probes of media wrongdoing and corruption. Criminal charges have been brought against suspects such as Rebekah Brooks, the former chief of News Corp.'s British operations, and Andy Coulson, a former Murdoch tabloid editor and the former communications chief for Prime Minister David Cameron.

Separately, police in Scotland said they detained and charged former News of the World journalist Bob Bird in Glasgow on Wednesday with attempting to pervert the course of justice during the 2006 defamation court case between the tabloid and former lawmaker Tommy Sheridan. Sheridan successfully sued the newspaper for defamation in 2006.

Bird, 56, edited the Scottish edition of the now-closed tabloid when it ran allegations about Sheridan's private life.

"I have always done my best to do the right thing throughout the 30, 40 years of my journalistic career and I will be denying the charge against me," he told reporters outside the police station after he was released later Wednesday.

International Itinerants: a New Breed of Expatriates?

Traditionally, expatriate managers have been treated from the organization?s perspective. However, as pointed out in one of my older blog posts, expatriation is a broad term that allows for several further classifications. For example, based on the locus of the transfer initiative ?traditional? corporation-assigned expatriates can be complemented by self-initiated expatriates. Although implying a wide range of international experiences, this classification still applies to a more conventional framework of employment where the individual?s career is meant to be fixed with one, or very few, employers. Hence, a company sends an employee on an international assignment at least with the prospect of successful repatriation and further career development within the company, while self-initiated expats choose to relocate to a foreign country and start building their career, hired under a local, host-county contract. Both scenarios implicitly assume some stability and career progression within one organization. However, in the past few decades the traditional career path has been changing, and by now the forces of globalization, reorganization and outsourcing have transformed businesses, increased competitive pressures and decisively shifted one?s career development responsibility from employers to individual employees. Today, one?s successful career is a matter of personal initiative and is quite likely to go beyond one organization.

Based on these notions, researchers (Banai & Harry, 2004; and Shaydulova & Banai, 2007) have introduced the term ?international itinerants?, to classify independent expatriates that are moving from place to place to develop an international career and not planning to go ?home?. In other words, contrary to the traditional path of progressing within one organization, these managers tend to build their professional career with multiple employers, meanwhile changing destinations and living the expatriate lifestyle. Banai and Harry (2004, pg. 100) defined them as ?professional managers who over their careers are employed for their ability, by at least two business organizations that are not related to each other, in at least two different foreign countries.?

International itinerants can be called a new breed of expatriates, suggesting a lower commitment to the employing organization, as by definition, international itinerants stay with one company for only a specific period of time and leave their organization in pursuit of a new job. An interesting question that arises here is whether the differences with traditional expatriates are due to personality characteristics (e.g. commitment; being more or less adventurous), or are a matter of opportunities and circumstances (e.g. no growth possibilities in the current company)?

The most recent exploratory study of international itinerants (Shaydulova & Banai, 2007) suggests that there are not many differences between international itinerants and traditional expatriates. The data of 138 respondents indicated that international itinerants have the same levels of organizational commitment, locus of control (belief about how much control one has over his/hers life), and instrumentality (belief that one?s efforts will pay off) as traditional expatriates. While this suggests the need to further explore possible differences based on stable personality characteristics (e.g. openness to change, adventurism), the authors propose that the lack of differences may indicate the important role of opportunities and circumstances.

Indeed, Banai and Harry?s (2004) primary description of international itinerants, among other career explanations such as being novelty seekers or possessing a unique expertise that can be transferred across cultures and organizations, includes the path of ?failed expatriates?. Specifically, the researchers argue that many of the international itinerants were originally employed by an international organization, and decided to remain abroad and venture on their own due to an unsuccessful repatriation. Based on my own research I believe that many employees will agree that repatriation may be even harder than the initial move abroad, and, contrary to expectations, overseas assignments may often have negative effects on one?s career. Indeed, employers often fail to plan an expatriate?s career path upon return home, and do not manage to make use of the new knowledge gained abroad. Moreover, the lack of assistance in re-adjusting to a changed work environment upon return may negatively influence the repatriate?s willingness to re-integrate into the home organization. As a result, foreseeing such difficulties and disappointments or experiencing them shortly upon return may lead expatriates to decide to leave the organization and try their luck in the already familiar host country or even another new destination.

Shaydulova and Banai (2007) note that if indeed a choice between staying with or leaving the initial employer is a matter of circumstance, there are some important managerial implications to account for. The current employer has the power to influence the individual?s choice in favor of the organization. Specifically, organizations can ensure more efficient repatriation, by planning it well ahead of the actual return home. Practically, companies can provide repatriation training, mentoring; they can also develop a clear career plan and ensure the efficient application of repatriates? new knowledge upon their return, which my own research? has shown to benefit not only the organization but also the individual.

A shift from keeping expatriates from becoming international itinerants to the explicit employment of international itinerants entails several advantages/disadvantages and implications to be discussed. This is something I will cover in one of my following posts.

Virgin in court bid to keep rail franchise

LONDON (AP) ? Virgin Trains says it will go to court in its campaign to hold onto the west coast rail franchise between London and Scotland.

Virgin, which announced the action on Tuesday, lost out to rival FirstGroup in bidding for a new 13-year franchise to run the line. Virgin boss Richard Branson had called the decision "insane" and questioned whether FirstGroup could meet its financial commitments. The Department for Transport had expected to sign a contract with FirstGroup this week.

FirstGroup responded that the bidding process had been fair. It said, "There has been no complaint about the process, which was carefully described in advance, until Virgin Rail Group had lost commercially."

?Maori writers? There are lots of us? | The Frankfurt Book Fair Blog

Cushion designed by Native Agent

Last week, in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival, I took a group of British friends to GBK, a New Zealand-owned burger restaurant. One of them asked me what a Kiwi Burger was, and I told him it would probably include beetroot, a slice of pineapple, and a fried egg. He ordered it ? and liked it ? though he was confused by the combination of ingredients, and said he?d never heard of such a thing before.

New Zealand: a country where we do/eat/say things that seem strange to other people, but make perfect sense to us.

In Frankfurt this year, it?s inevitable that some things will get lost or confused in translation ? not only from New Zealand to Germany, but in the other direction. That?s already happened. In June, after the press conference announcing the specifics of the Guest of Honour programme, Andreas Platthaus wrote a piece in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that was picked up in the New Zealand media.

My German isn?t good enough to grasp every word of the original article, so ? like many New Zealanders ? I?ve relied on an English translation on Stephen Judd?s blog.?And, like many New Zealanders, I wasn?t happy to read Andreas Platthaus?s conclusions, which I think paint too simplistic a picture.

Firstly, the idea that books in the Maori language are a recent phenomenon is inaccurate: the first Maori-English dictionary was compiled in 1820, and the surge in Maori literacy in the first half of the nineteenth century was driven by the ever-increasing availability of books ? albeit mostly religious texts ? in Maori.

It?s true that today Maori-language publishing is a small piece of the overall publishing landscape in New Zealand, but that?s because Maori-speaking and English-speaking communities are no longer the separate entities they were a century-and-a-half ago. Andreas Platthaus talks about the Maori greetings employed at the Frankfurt press conference as ?obligatory? (?obligatorischen?) and ?compulsory? (?Pflicht?). But actually they?re just customary, because English and Maori are the two official languages of New Zealand, and because most of us speak a little Maori, if not a lot.

Radiare Whare - a work by Maori artist Rangi Kipa

He also talks about the sixty New Zealand authors coming to Frankfurt as ?obviously mostly English-speaking.? In fact we?re ALL English-speaking, whether we?re Maori or Pakeha (or both, or neither). There are complicated and often unhappy historical reasons for the dominance of the English language in New Zealand ? let?s just call it Imperialism, for now! ? but the relatively small number of fluent Maori speakers in New Zealand does not diminish the importance of Maori culture in and to New Zealand, or the importance to many of us of our Maori heritage and identity ? just as we don?t demand the Irish all speak fluent Gaelic, say, or that the Welsh are fluent in their own language in order to ?count? as the real thing.

At the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival in May, I attended a session in which Witi Ihimaera was interviewed by fellow writer Fiona Kidman. During the session, Witi mentioned something in passing about ?nine Maori novelists.? I scribbled this in my notebook, and later wondered: Only nine? Which nine? I could think of seven Maori novelists active today: Witi; Patricia Grace; Keri Hulme (still the only New Zealand Booker-Prize winner); Alan Duff; James George; Kelly Ana Morey; and me.

So I posted on Facebook asking for other ideas ? and was deluged with additional names: the late Dame Katerina Mataira, who wrote in Maori, and the late H. Pat Baker, who wrote historical novels; the feminist writer Renee, best known as a dramatist but also the author of novels and stories; poet, novelist and performer Michael O?Leary; Lisa Cherrington, author of ?The People-Faces?. Names from the past like June Mitchell; recent first-time novelists like Whiti Hereka and Isabel Waiti-Mulholland. My accomplished editor, John Huria, mentioned two YA novelists, Takuta Hohepa (Darren Joseph) and Mokena Reedy. I?m sure that there are people reading this blog post who could come up with many additional names.

Fellow author Rachael King wondered if Witi was talking about Maori novelists currently active; Kelly Ana Morey wondered if he meant Maori writers who?d written three or more novels. We all agreed that the list would be much longer if we could include Maori short story writers, or playwrights, or poets, or screenwriters, or nonfiction writers. I may have misheard or misunderstood Witi?s ?nine Maori novelists? comment. It?s easy, listening to people talk ? at festivals or at press conferences ? to get the wrong end of the stick, or to draw a simple conclusion from a more nuanced discussion.

After a number of very interesting conversations so far with German journalists, I wonder if it?s too easy for people to see Maori identity as one thing, or Maori experience as one thing, rather than a complex mess of differing points of view and personal/political histories. On the subject of contemporary Maori writers, I?d like to pass on these exciting piece of information. There are lots of us, writing across a variety of different art forms. We all speak English, though some of us are fluent, or at least more adept, in Maori than others. We don?t agree with each other. We don?t share one point of view. You?ll have a chance to hear us speak for ourselves at the Literaturfestival in Berlin on 12th September, where a number of us are taking part in an event called ?The Long Night of Maori Stories.?

Togo releases 119 people detained during protests: minister

Togo's security minister said Sunday authorities have released 119 people who were detained during this week's rallies organised by an opposition coalition that led to clashes between police and demonstrators.

At the same time eight people were held in custody, the minister, colonel Damehane Yark, said in a statement.

The coalition Let's Save Togo said more than 100 people were injured and 125 arrested during the rallies Tuesday and Wednesday that were dispersed by police with tear gas, with some demonstrators throwing rocks and burning tyres in response.

"We still do not know if 119 people have actually been released, but we can say that some of our supporters who were detained have been freed," Pedro Amuzu, a member of the coalition told AFP, adding he would know more on Monday.

According to the ministry's statement, 119 people "without identification" were detained overnight August 21 to 22 during an "identity check operation", but were released on Friday after "detailed verifications".

The operation was launched because some people had "their motorbikes taken by rowdy protesters" in the city of Lome, the statement said.

The eight people still in custody were arrested carrying knives, and would be referred to the prosecutor, the statement added.

Let's Save Togo has announced plans to hold further marches followed by sit-ins at the independence square in Lome next week, setting up another potential showdown with the authorities who have previously ruled out demonstrations in prominent areas.

Protesters have been seeking a delay in parliamentary elections to allow reforms to first take place, as well as the repeal of changes to electoral laws that they say the government pushed through.

Let's Save Togo's coordinator Zeus Ajavon called Thursday for an end to President Faure Gnassingbe's government and urged Togolese to "disobey and organise".

While the elections are expected to be held in October, no date has been set.

Togo has been run by the same family for more than four decades. Gnassingbe Eyadema ruled the country for 38 years with an iron fist until his death in 2005.

Shortly after his death was announced, the military installed his son Faure Gnassingbe as president. He has since won elections in 2005 and 2010.

DOG FIGHT

At least one Tampa, Fla., rally's gone to the dogs already.

Amid a protest objecting to the way Mitt Romney transported the family pet on a years-ago vacation ? inside an animal carrier strapped atop the car ? a woman stepped into the crowd and began loudly defending the GOP candidate.

"What Mitt Romney did to his dog, his dog liked and it was safe and enjoyable," said Barbara Seidenberg. As several canine-toting protesters tried to shout her down, she pressed on.

"Barack Obama was a 10-year-old boy when he ate dog," she said, apparently referring to a passage in one of Obama's books in which he writes about eating dog meat as a boy in Indonesia. "But he was a grown man when he decided his whole persona and his life was going to be committed to turning this country into less of a country so that ? "

She was drowned out by a protester yelling "Obama 2012!"

A shouting match ensued, and Seidenberg stormed off.

Ortiz returns, Gonzalez sits, Red Sox win

By HOWARD ULMAN

AP Sports Writer

updated 11:00 p.m. ET Aug. 24, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz returned to the lineup, Adrian Gonzalez left it and the Red Sox broke a four-game losing streak.

It was an eventful night for Boston's top two hitters.

Ortiz was back after missing 35 games with a right Achilles strain and had two hits and two RBIs on the first two pitches he saw, sparking Boston to a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

But Gonzalez was pulled from the lineup minutes before the game amid reports that he was part of a major trade being discussed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"We talked for a little bit," Ortiz said. "He's shocked, like we are a little bit. Adrian wants to be here, that's why he came here, and help this ballclub to win a World Series."

Ortiz already has done that twice, in 2004 and 2007. But the Red Sox went 13-22 while he was sidelined as they dropped to 59-66 before beating the Royals

"David was awesome," said Andrew Bailey, who earned his first save after being sidelined all season until Aug. 14 following right thumb surgery.

"You can't say enough about that guy. And for him to come off the DL and to be such a sparkplug in our offense, he was huge tonight."

Pedro Ciriaco's two-run double in the seventh inning put Boston ahead 4-3, and Jon Lester continued his surge from a poor first-half of the season with seven solid innings.

Lester (8-10) has won his past three starts and seemed fine after leaving with a cramp in his left hamstring with no outs in the top of the eighth. He had thrown three pitches in the inning, all balls.

"I should have said something after pitch one or my warmups," he said.

Lester, who allowed three runs and six hits, felt improvement in his pitching even before his current winning streak.

"I'm just winning. Winning cures everything," he said. "I've been feeling good with the adjustments that we've made. ... I feel like I was headed in the right direction probably five or six starts ago."

Ortiz started the Red Sox scoring with a two-run single in the first off Bruce Chen that drove in Ciriaco and Jacoby Ellsbury, who both singled. Then he doubled with two outs in the third but was stranded.

"He's looking good," Chen said. "I just try and make good pitches, but, obviously, he's one of the best hitters in the American League."

The Red Sox needed Ortiz with Gonzalez not playing.

"I had 10 minutes" before the game to redo the lineup, Boston manager Bobby Valentine said.

In Los Angeles, first baseman James Loney was pulled from the lineup against the Miami Marlins. Gonzalez was leading the Red Sox with 86 RBIs, 145 hits and 37 doubles and was first in the majors with a .398 batting average with runners in scoring position.

They would be involved in a trade that was being discussed that would send right-hander Josh Beckett, left fielder Carl Crawford and infielder Nick Punto to Los Angeles, a baseball official informed of the discussions said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcements were made.

Beckett (5-11) was scheduled to pitch for Boston in the second game of the four-game series Saturday night.

Ciriaco continued his surprisingly hot hitting since being called up on July 6 from Triple-A Pawtucket. He went 4 for 6 in a 14-13 loss on Thursday night to the Los Angeles Angels, his third four-hit game of the season, and went 2 for 4 on Friday night.

Trailing 3-2, Boston began the seventh with a walk to Mauro Gomez, who started in place of Gonzalez. Kevin Herrera (1-2) replaced Chen and gave up a single to Mike Aviles, sending Gomez to second. Scott Podsednik than sacrificed the runners to second and third before Ciriaco blooped his double into short left field.

"The leadoff walk in the seventh and then two 0-2 hits did us in," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "The pitch to Ciriaco was actually not a bad pitch, but it's 0-2, you just threw him a good fastball and you come back with a changeup down and in and he hit it."

The Royals had tied the game at 2 in the third on a leadoff homer by Eric Hosmer, his 12th of the year, and an RBI double by Alex Gordon. They went ahead 3-2 in the fourth on a bases-loaded infield single by Johnny Giavotella after a walk to Mike Moustakas, a single by Bryan Pena and a walk to Hosmer.

"He's obviously not having his kind of a year but he's still got great stuff," Gordon said of Lester. "I thought putting up those runs against him was pretty impressive. We just couldn't finish it."

Notes: Jeremy Guthrie (2-3) is scheduled to pitch for Kansas City on Saturday night. ... In their past 16 games, Boston is 5-11 and Kansas City is 10-6. ... The win was Boston's first in a one-run game at home since June 21 when it beat Miami 6-5.

'Shameful': Sandusky victim sues Penn State

By The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A young man who testified against Jerry Sandusky sued Penn State on Friday for its "deliberate and shameful" handling of complaints that the former assistant football coach behaved inappropriately and sexually toward boys.

The suit filed by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.

It described their actions as "a function of (Penn State's) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation."

The complaint was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court Friday night, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, told The Associated Press. The young man's initial accusations sparked the investigation that led to criminal charges against Sandusky and two university officials.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of boys, both on and off campus. He awaits sentencing that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Penn State ex-president Graham Spanier: Freeh report on sex scandal is wrong

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered the state investigation that last year resulted in the criminal charges.

Former Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who is on leave, were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Both deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial in January.

Famed football coach Joe Paterno was fired. He died last January.

The suit draws heavily from court testimony, grand jury investigations and Penn State's own investigative report, conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. The report details how university officials handled the claims against Sandusky and Sandusky's behavior. Victim 1 is known as "John Doe C" in the complaint. The suit names no other defendants than the State College university.

University spokesman Dave La Torre said the school has no comment on the pending litigation.

"The university takes these cases very seriously," La Torre said, adding that the current president and board "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."

The suit claimed that a "special relationship" between Penn State and The Second Mile, a Sandusky-founded charity for youth, gave Sandusky a respectable public image and connections that enabled him to perform criminal acts.

The young man known as "Victim 2" in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case spoke out for the first time through his attorneys about how the former Penn State coach abused him and stalked him with phone messages. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

It alleged "(Penn State) believed its reputation and economic interests would be adversely impacted if the public learned that a man closely associated with the school's football program was, in fact, a pedophile."

The Second Mile's future remains uncertain, subject to a legal dispute.

'Numerous victims'
According to the lawsuit, Victim 1 met Sandusky about eight years ago, when the boy was 11 and a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by The Second Mile. In his second year, the boy drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the suit said.

Over a three-year period ending in 2008, the suit said, Sandusky assaulted the boy more than 100 times, including fondling and oral sex. The lawsuit claims Sandusky attacked "numerous victims over a span of 30 years," but noted that his criminal trial was limited to a 15-year period and 10 victims.

Following Victim 1's testimony, Sandusky was convicted of all six counts that related to him, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for instances of oral sex.

The suit alleged negligence, fraudulent concealment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. It said Victim 1 has suffered physical and emotional injuries and will likely need medical and psychological help well into his future. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Another Sandusky accuser has filed a federal lawsuit related to the scandal and a second victim has filed a court notice that he will file complaint. Lawyers have suggested others may take legal action.

NASA Jets, Tickets Taking Off for Space Shuttle's Flight to L.A.

NASA is deploying a few high-flying paparazzi to Hollywood to scout out the best photo spots for next month's arrival of one of its biggest stars: space shuttle Endeavour.

Meanwhile on the East Coast, tickets have just gone on sale for the public to stake out their own photo ops to see Endeavour as it departs its Florida spaceport for the final time. Endeavour, which flew 25 times to space, is being ferried to Los Angeles for display at the California Science Center.

On Saturday (Aug. 25), two NASA jets ? a T-38 astronaut trainer and an F-18 Hornet ? will circle the skies over Los Angeles at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet (18,000 meters). The jet flights, which are in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, have been described by NASA as only "to capture photographic imagery."

But it's no secret that the aircraft are part of the advance entourage for Endeavour. The retired orbiter, flying atop the space agency's modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, is scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sept. 20.

Before touching down, the jumbo jet carrying Endeavour is expected to make several scenic flyovers of the L.A. area, setting up the possibility for some iconic shots to be taken of the shuttle soaring past famous landmarks like the Hollywood sign. Saturday's jet flights will scope out the best flight paths to capture those photos. [Photos: How Shuttle Endeavour Was Made]

NASA photographers embarked on a similar set of flights before Endeavour's older sister, space shuttle Discovery, arrived in Washington, D.C. in April. Two T-38 training jets were dispatched to the nation's capital to plot the shuttle's path, which later led to photos of Discovery flying past the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, White House and other historic landmarks.

Fly-out photo ops

Details on when, where and how to see Endeavour arrive in Los Angeles have not yet been announced, nor have any of the potential flyover locations along the shuttle's trip from Florida to California. Tickets however, went on sale Friday (Aug. 24) to see Endeavour depart its launch and landing site for a final time.

NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host four days of activities leading up to the scheduled takeoff of Endeavour atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft on Sept. 17 at approximately 7:30 a.m. EST (1200 GMT).

With general admission, the public can view the space shuttle ferry flight as it passes over the visitor complex. A limited number of $40 tickets (in addition to the general admission) will take guests out to NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF), for a runway-side seat to view Endeavour take off on its ferry flight to California.

The Visitor Complex is also offering a $20 tour (in addition to the general admission) on Sept. 14 and 15 that will offer guests a "windshield view" of Endeavour as it is mated to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The special tour will also drive by Endeavour's launch pads.

Other activities include a chance to see Endeavour's final astronauts, the crew of the 2011 STS-134 mission, during their visit to the visitor complex.?

Final ferry flight

Endeavour is the last of NASA's retired shuttles to take to the air.

In April, the fleet leader Discovery and the prototype test orbiter Enterprise were ferried to Washington, D.C. and New York City, respectively. Atlantis, which is destined for the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, will be moved the short distance over land in November.

Endeavour will embark on a similar, if not longer road trip once in Los Angeles. For two days beginning on Oct. 12, the shuttle will be paraded atop a modified NASA wheeled transporter through the streets of Inglewood and L.A.

By dusk on Sept. 13, Endeavour is expected to be inside the California Science Center's newly-constructed Samuel Oschin Display Pavilion.

Endeavour's exhibit will open to the public on Oct. 30. The pavilion is a temporary display however, as the science center plans to ultimately house Endeavour in its planned Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, targeted to open in 2017.

For its permanent display, Endeavour will be mounted as it was on the launch pad with side-mounted rockets and a replica of its external tank. In preparation for that exhibit, a pair of the shuttle's solid rocket boosters were scheduled to arrive on Friday at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, where they will be held until the science center is ready.

The two 149-foot long (45-meter) boosters were previously on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, from where they were trucked to California.

For more information or to reserve viewing tickets, see the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's website. See shuttles.collectspace.com for continuing coverage of the delivery and display of NASA's retired space shuttles.

Wheels of Fortunes: Pebble Beach Councours d'Elegance | Gear ...

To truly understand modern car culture, one must embrace the past ? and nowhere is automotive history more rewarding and jaw-dropping than the 18th green of Pebble Beach at the annual Concours d?Elegance. The Pebble Beach contest is the great grandson of 17th century French Aristocracy carriage parades during down sweltering Parisian parkways. Eventually, horses gave way to horsepower and the Concours d?Elegance (?competition of elegance?) became a car show of sorts for proud French drivers (we can easily imagine them with berets, calf-skin driving gloves and pencil-thin moustaches).

Today, the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance is the pinnacle of automotive excellence, and the end of a week of classic car activities in the Monterey area. So when we got the chance to attend the 62nd annual event, which raises more than a million bucks for charity, we grabbed our camera and iPhone, bow tie and suspenders, and set off for Carmel Bay to see the 200 pristine vehicular specimens dating from the late 1800s to the 1960s.

Our photo essay begins after the jump.

The Concours encompasses races at Laguna Seca featuring 1920s Bugattis and Porsches, auctions that include a 1968 Ford GT 40 going for $11 million, parties at night and Ferrari motorcades during the day ? but everyone comes for Sunday morning, when the best of the best are on display for judging.

The day began under characteristic coastal fogginess as the cars arrived one by one at 5:30 a.m. (up by 4:30 a.m., you?re welcome) in the tradition of ?Dawn Patrol.? After about two hours the army of cars and a grip of motorcycles were in position for judging. Various celebrities ? including the famously car-obsessed Mr. Jay Leno ? and thousands of others in ascots, seersuckers and more hats than the royal wedding were on hand to see concept cars, Rolls-Royces, Duesenbergs and other entries across 20 classes.

At first, viewing the cars was manageable and we took our time picking through the chromed and leathered beauties. Quickly, however, what seemed like the most impressive car we?d ever spotted was overshadowed by an even more amazing specimen. Is this what being at the Victoria?s Secret fashion show after party is like?

One of our favorite highlights from this year?s show was a collection of Mahraja ? Indian royalty ? autos. From cars built to hunt tigers (yeah!) to vehicles that looked like swans (yikes), this special class of vehicle was strange and unique. The Concours d?Elegance is a bucket list experience and a must for anyone who appreciates motoring history. Rather than the usual snapshots, which you can see strewn across the hundred of automotive sites, we instead aimed our lenses on angles and colors that captured the eye.
