Following months of legal wrangling, injunctions and appeals, Samsung and Apple will face off in a federal court in San Jose today. The two companies accuse each other of patent and design infringement, with Apple seeking more than $2.5bn in damages, and Samsung looking to claim royalties for five of its own patents.

The narrative is all too familiar -- Apple accuses Samsung of being a "copycat" and imitating its products and inventions rather than coming up with its own stuff. Samsung counters that Apple's claims are overly broad, and that its actions are anti-competitive and monopolistic.

Apple will argue that Samsung has copied its patented designs, and that Samsung's products, in both hardware and software, are "confusingly similar" to the iPhone and iPad. It's a tactic which has been met with some success, notably in the German courts, over the past year. However, it's backfired in the UK, where a High Court judge recently ruled that Samsung did not copy Apple's iPad designs, and ordered Apple to take out ads to this effect.

So we're in for yet more claims and counterclaims, with the certainty of appeals to follow whatever verdicts the court reaches. So strap yourself in, and prepare for endless back and forth lawyerin' over the coming weeks. As our own Jerry Hildenbrand noted in his recent editorial, this is just the way things have to be in the mobile tech world in 2012. Let's just hope that whatever the decision, it doesn't impact consumers' freedom to choose the phone they want.

(KMOV) -- A News 4/Post-Dispatch poll shows John Brunner leading Sarah Steelman and Todd Akin for the GOP Senate nomination. It also shows trouble for Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill. She trails all three candidates when placed head to head.

The poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research has a 5% margin of error.

In the Republican primary the poll showed the following from likely Republican voters: John Brunner - 33%, Sarah Steelman - 27%, Todd Akin - 17%, Mark Memoly - 3%, Mark Patrick Lodes - 1%, Undecided - 19%

The first thing that stands out is Brunner?s lead.

?No one knew his name 6 months ago, 8 months ago,? said Christopher Ave, Post-Dispatch Political Editor. ?So he has spent a lot of money, a lot of his own money getting his name out there. This poll would indicate he's been somewhat successful.?

It is important to note that 19% of those polled said they are undecided.

?There is enough wiggle room for certainly the top 2 and perhaps the 3rd, Akin, to think that they can win,? said Ave. ?I think you will see continued spending.?

The poll asked likely voters who they would choose between McCaskill and each of the 3 Republicans head to head. Here are the results:

Steelman ? 49%????????????????? Brunner ? 52%???????????????????? Akin ? 49%

McCaskill ? 41%???????????????? McCaskill ? 41%????????????????? McCaskill ? 44%

?I would say it doesn't look particularly good for McCaskill,? said Ave.

Outside PAC money has been pouring into Missouri to attack Claire McCaskill. And McCaskill has spent money attacking each Republican candidate.

?McCaskill hasn't had one opponent to target,? said Ave. ?I think now when the primary is over McCaskill's people will have someone to train their fire on.?

And that?s when we will likely see a barrage of national PAC money in Missouri supporting and attacking both sides.

Ruth Read048 Mrs. Ruth MELLON Read, age 97, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at her daughter Judy?s home near Casnovia. Born on May 14, 1915 in Mears, MI the third of ten children to Reuben and Jennie May Graham. Her parents and eight siblings preceded her in death and she is survived by one brother, Thomas Bud (Helen) Graham.

She married Kenton Howard Mellon on January, 1, 1932. Together they raised four children, Arlene Miller,?Marie (Barry) Malone,?Judy (Bruce) Rollston, and?Max (Mary) Mellon who survive her and all live in the Grant area. As a loving, caring mother Ruth was known for her delicious pies, homemade noodles, canning and making nutritious meals for her family and also giving to others. A hard worker, she helped on the blueberry farm, sewed, served as a 4-H leader, and in Bridgeton Ladies Aid, encouraged with music lessons and horn practices, attended rural Sunday School, an also worked as a clerk at the Bridgeton Store. Kenton died Oct. 3, 1970 at home near Bridgeton with Ruth and Max present.

Later Ruth married Bert Tuinstra on Sept. 20, 1977 at Ashland Center Church with Mr. Conrad Daniels officiating. They enjoyed time in Florida until his death on 1-22-1979. She married Robert Read April 21, 1983 and they also lived in Florida where her families and grandchildren visited. Ruth served as caregiver for all three husbands as they died before her, Robert dying on 1-24-1991.

Over the years Ruth has enjoyed getting together with family and friends ? going out for lunch or ice cream. She crocheted afghans for family members, table cloths, and doilies. Until recently she pedaled her stationary bike and lived in her own home in Grant.

Additional survivors are 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death is son-in-law Kenneth Miller.

Visitation will be from 7-9 PM on Tuesday, July 31 at McKinley Funeral Home in Grant. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 1, at McKinley Funeral Home in Grant with Mr. Daren Penwell officiating. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Michigan Memorial Fund at the Fremont Area Community Foundation to be matched. Condolences may be expressed online at www.mckinleyfuneral.com.

Once the two sides reached an agreement on a new labor deal, the latter was realized with the loss of 20 percent of the season, costing owners and players about $400 million.

But this summer couldn't be going any better for David Stern, his 30 owners and the league's 450 players. The NBA logo is ready to dwarf Big Ben for the next two weeks. A record 57 NBA players ? 39 current and 18 former ? will be playing in London, filling spots on 11 of the 12 Olympic rosters. In all, 20 of the league's 30 teams will be represented.

"Where the NBA is today versus where it was last year, it's night and day,'' said Marc Ganis, president of SportsCorp Ltd., the Chicago-based sports business consulting firm. "The Summer Olympics is the greatest free advertising the NBA can have, and because of the way NBC will be highlighting men's basketball, it will be the dominant storyline of the entire Games, even more than it was four years ago in China. The Olympics is a marvelous international platform that the NBA could never replicate on its own. The NBA will be getting maximum exposure. It's just perfect timing for the league.?

The favorites to repeat as gold medal champions, Team USA won't travel alone as it competes and tries to get to the championship game, to be played on Closing Ceremonies Day on Aug. 12. Along the way, there will be constant comparisons to the '92 Dream Team, triggering more debate and more talk about the NBA.

Plus, Stern has floated out the idea that he'd like to change the current system of picking the league's superstars to play for Team USA by placing NBA players only 23 years and younger on the roster. Because of how the league prospers in the Olympics, putting an end to the ?Dream Team? concept is sure to continue to inspire even more debate about the NBA long after these Games end.

Although the juris doctor degree is still a prestigious title and the need for lawyers is still substantial, law schools are graduating more students than the market can bear. Moreover, many of the services offered by lawyers and attorneys can be obtained online, from professionals in non-legal fields (such as accountants), or through other means which do not require an individual to hire an actual lawyer. Although lawyers must attend law school for three to four years, pay tens of thousands of dollars in tuition, and pass the bar exam, law school graduates and practicing attorneys are facing great uncertainty.

Journalism

- One of the most important skills a law student or lawyer must have is writing ? in fact, many law school professors and practicing attorneys argue it is the most important skill. The law school curriculum is built around reading and writing, but speaking extemporaneously, speaking comfortably in public, and ?thinking on your feet? are also important skills a good lawyer must master. Reading, writing, and speaking are also precisely the skills required of any good journalist. Many high-profile journalists, including Geraldo Rivera and Jeff Greenfield, are lawyers by training. Law students learn to communicate clearly and synthesize ideas, both of which are critical journalism skills.

Real Estate

- Property law and contracts are two of the foundational courses taught in every law school, and real estate transactions are generally either facilitated by a lawyer, or involve some legal work done by an attorney. Law schools teach students how to negotiate and structure financial transactions, analyze contract terms, and assess the risks involved ? all of which are very useful in the field of real estate investment. These are a few of the areas in which the skills of a lawyer can come in handy ? and none of them involve the actual practice of law. Over the past several months, local governments across China have disclosed information on the use of funds raised through the state-run lottery.

However the number of government agencies that have opened their books falls far short of the requirements outlined by Beijing.

In March, China?s Ministry of Finance called upon finance, civil administration, and sports bureaus in each of China?s 34 provinces to make public information on the use of lottery funds, saying that the reports should be released before the end of June.

However the Guangzhou newspaper Information Times reported last week that only 30 provincial-level government bureaus had published lottery data so far.

Among them were 13 sports bureaus, 8 civil administration bureaus, and 9 finance bureaus.

Of the provinces that complied with the finance ministry?s order, many released the relevant data long after Beijing?s deadline had passed.

The Sports Bureau of Jiangsu Province published its lottery figures in the official Xinhua Daily newspaper on July 20, while sports authorities in Henan released lottery data on July 22.

China?s lottery is divided into two separate organizations, the China Sports Lottery and the China Welfare Lottery.

China?s Sports Lottery is managed at the national level by the country?s State General Administration of Sports, and overseen locally by provincial sports bureaus.? Funds raised are typically used to promote public fitness, as well as support training of China?s Olympic athletes.

The China Welfare Lottery falls under the authority of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and uses its proceeds to fund a wide range of humanitarian projects, from nursing homes to disaster relief.

China?s lottery has seen steady growth in recent years.? On July 18, the Ministry of Finance reported that lottery sales in the first six months of 2012 had reached 129 billion yuan, a nearly 28 percent increase from the same period in 2011.

However the lottery has come under occasional criticism for its lack of transparency.

Earlier this month, popular Hong Kong economist and TV host Lang Xianping called on viewers to stop buying lottery tickets, likening the Welfare Lottery to China?s Red Cross, another charitable organization which has been heavily criticized for corruption and misuse of funds.

I have so many awesome recipes I want to share, I'm busting at the seams... not to mention I can't wait to introduce my dehydrator, sprouting trays and other new friends. Good times.

Alas, today is about a simple, delicious dish I haven't had since my good old days as a hostess at Amici's Italian Restaurant, Pasta Alfredo. ?I remember the first day I watched Eric (the chef & owner) prepare pasta alfredo; a stick of butter, a cup of cream, some salt & pepper and not much else all tossed together with fettucine and poured into a single serving pasta bowl. ?Yikes! ?I'd had no idea 'til then what exactly it took to create one of my favorite items on the menu and ever since it's been one of those dishes I never eat...

Recipe for Pasta Alfredo (serves 4)

Pasta

2 large zucchini (peeled for a closer to pasta affect, or leave peel on for added color)

Alfredo Sauce

2 cups raw cashews
4-5 tablespoons lemon juice
1/1/2 cups water
1/8 cup olive oil
1-2 cloves garlic
3-4 tsp. Braggs Liquid Aminos or gluten free tamari
3-4 tbsp. nutritional yeast
1-2 tsp. Celtic or Himalayan Sea Salt or to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
2 tbsp. pine nuts &/or a few julienned basil ribbons for garnish

Cut zucchinis in half (otherwise pasta strands will be veeerrrry long), then using a Spiralizer tool, create spaghetti pasta strands. Place in large bowl and set aside.?
Place all ingredients into a heavy duty blender (Vitamix) Blend into thick cream. Add more water if needed to create preferred consistency.?Check seasonings and adjust to your taste.?
Pour alfredo sauce over the pasta noodles and toss to coat.
Place into serving bowls and garnish pinenuts &/or julienned basil ribbons if desired.
