News outlets reported that as Mitt Romney prepares for Wednesday's debate, which will include health care, Vice President Biden campaigned in Florida, appealing to seniors by criticizing the Romney/Ryan plan for Medicare.
The New York Times: Romney, Appealing to Wider Audience, Recalibrates Message
Candidates who emerge from competitive primaries ? as Mr. Romney did ? often find themselves forced to recalibrate messages and proposals initially aimed at partisan primary voters to appeal to more moderate general election voters.? ... when Mr. Romney was asked in an interview with NBC News this week how he could better connect with Americans, he pointed out: ?Don?t forget ? I got everybody in my state insured.? At a rally that same day, Mr. Romney renewed his call to repeal the president?s health care law (Cooper, 9/28).
The Associated Press: Biden, 69, Seeks Florida Seniors' Vote For Obama
Joe Biden may just be the perfect pitchman for the senior vote. Seeing Medicare as a window to gain new support, President Barack Obama's campaign dispatched the vice president to two sprawling Florida retirement communities Friday, hoping a white-haired 69-year-old running mate will be able to stir enthusiasm among seniors in Democrat-rich South Florida and tip the scales for the state's 29 electoral votes (Sedensky, 9/28).
ABC News: Biden Courts Seniors, Blasts Romney-Ryan on Social Security, Medicare?
He argued that that Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would turn Medicare into ?vouchercare? and increase the direct costs seniors would have to bear. ?Rather than tell you, since their convention or even at their convention, what their position on Medicare is, they?ve gone out of the way and spent tens of millions ? I don?t know maybe hundreds, I don?t know how much, millions of dollars ? on advertising telling you what they say our position on Medicare is,? Biden said. ?All of you in this room know that President Obama has increased the benefits available to people on Medicare today by the action he took" (Saenz, 9/28).
Los Angeles Times: Joe Biden to Florida seniors: Mitt Romney would threaten Medicare
Biden has long been hammering the Republicans on Medicare, which he continued to do here by tying Romney to the plan once offered by his vice presidential pick, Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin. As he acknowledged that Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has revised his initial plan, Biden said the debate gets to the issue of "someone's credibility" (Memoli, 9/28).
Fox News:?
The vice president said the ?press accurately points out? that he cites Ryan budget numbers to hit Romney, but Biden doubled down on his offensive, saying it?s a ?fair? argument. ... ?Can you imagine the president supporting a plan that would, under any circumstances, would raise the cost for seniors $6,400 your out-of-pocket?? he said, referring to a CBO estimate of the difference between projected health care costs in 2022 and the premium-support subsidy for an average 65-year-old proposed by House Republicans. As voices from the crowd shouted ?No!? Biden continued, ?So press, that?s why I raise it" (Lin, 9/28).
NBC News: In Florida, Biden Assails Romney-Ryan Ticket Over Medicare, Social Security Taxes
[The vice president] did face persistent questioning on the Obama administration's health care plan when he stopped at Nestor's, a Jewish deli in Boca Raton. Steve Grossman, a 39-year-old who said he worked in the financial services industry, approached Biden as he sat down to order a tuna salad platter and began asking about health insurance costs. The vice president initially seemed reluctant to answer ...?but he ended up offering a description of state-based health care exchanges more fitting for a think tank roundtable than a deli?(Dann, 9/28).

A large-scale study of Swiss attitudes to religion has been carried out by the University of Lausanne. They discovered the same trends of secularisation occurring in Switzerland as in the rest of Europe.
The mainstream churches in Switzerland are dwindling, society is becoming increasingly secularised and there is a growing polarisation between conservative and liberals on the religious spectrum.
Interestingly, the secularisation process is also happening among young Muslims.
The two main churches, Roman Catholic and Protestant, are both haemorrhaging membership and even those who remain in the fold feel "distanced" from the church and retain only a superficial attachment.
The phenomenon of keeping religion at arms' length was studied by sociologist J?rg Stolz of Lausanne University.
"More than 60 per cent of the population can be counted in that distanced group. It's a group who say 'I am Catholic but ?' or 'I am Protestant but ?'. There is always a 'but', they will say 'I'm not practising' or 'it's not the most important thing in my life'," he told swissinfo.ch.
"This group also distances itself from a complete atheism," Stolz said. They believe in a higher power but have not made up their minds what form it takes. It's a large group, not just in Switzerland but in most other Western countries," he added.
Despite their reluctance to conform on matters of faith and in practising their religion, these "distanced" Christians still think the church is valuable socially and do not support its separation from the state. (A church tax is applicable in Switzerland).
Meanwhile, the proportion of institutional believers, people who actually believe in the churches' teachings and turn up regularly for church services, is dwindling. They now stand at 15 per cent of Protestants and 23 per cent of Catholics. It is worth noting that the ranks of faithful Catholics are being swelled by immigrants.
The trend of people leaving the main churches is very likely to continue, according to Stolz. The reasons they give are indifference to the church's activities and anger at the reactionary nature of the church under the present pope. Another reason is to avoid paying the church tax, but this is one that people are less inclined to admit to ? there is a residual guilt in leaving the church because of money.
According to the research, most people think that religion should be consigned to the private sphere and that "extremist" tendencies and proselytising should not be accepted.
The researchers see the potential for future conflict between very religious and very secular people.
However Stolz sees no risk of Islamisation in Switzerland. "People often have the idea that there is a bloc that might grow immensely and create an Islamisation but nothing could be further from the truth."
The research also identifies a secularisation trend within younger generations of Muslims and a desire among leaders of the diverse communities to integrate into Swiss society.

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? NFL officials ended their labor dispute with the league by approving a new eight-year contract with a 112-5 vote Saturday, then hustled off to the airport to get to work.
Next stop, stadiums around the country.
And, the officials hope, anonymity.
"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "That's how we like to work."
The vote ended a labor spat that created three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew criticism of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.
"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" Green said. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."
They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place.
The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.
"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.
Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.
The deal came together quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night.
Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.
The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.
Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.
The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.
"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

ZURICH (Reuters) - Export-oriented Swiss industrial companies have started to recover from the ill-effects of the strong Swiss franc and are doing better now than at the start of the year, a study showed, suggesting Switzerland may yet avoid a recession.
Large corporations were improving at a quicker pace than small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the survey by Swiss bank UBS found, with firms focused on the domestic market positioned best of all thanks to robust consumer demand.
Switzerland earns every second franc abroad, and the highly-valued currency has stifled exports, particularly to the euro zone. To prevent deflation and a recession, the central bank set a cap of 1.20 Swiss francs per euro a year ago.
"While a low-level turnaround may be evident in the industrial sector, where a growing number of companies are reporting improved figures, sectors focusing on the domestic market such as the construction and service sectors are benefiting from consistently high domestic demand," it said in a statement on Thursday.
"With only a few exceptions, the large companies posted better figures than the SMEs," it also said.
Domestic demand accounts for nearly 60 percent of annual output.
The machine and electrical (MEM) industry is one of the sectors particularly hit by the franc's strength against the euro. Some firms have threatened to move production abroad to lower costs.
The economy contracted in the second quarter, fuelling fears that Switzerland -- which for long seemed immune to the neighboring euro zone's woes -- might after all suffer a recession due to the strong franc.
And in a possible sign of more weakness in the third quarter, PMI manufacturing data posted its fifth contraction in a row in August.
The Swiss National Bank said earlier this month it expects growth of 1 percent this year.
Another sector of the Swiss economy to be hit is tourism, with hotels complaining of falling visitor numbers as holidaymakers choose cheaper destinations.
"The effects of the strong franc are still very evident in the tourism industry. However, the situation has stabilized at a low level," the UBS survey said.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California man linked to an anti-Islam film that has stoked violent protests across the Muslim world was ordered jailed without bond on Thursday by a federal judge over accusations that he violated terms of his probation on a bank fraud conviction.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, has been under investigation by probation officials looking into whether he violated the terms of his 2011 release from prison on a bank fraud conviction while making the film.
As a condition of his release, Nakoula, a Coptic Christian who most recently lived in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos, was barred from accessing the Internet or using aliases without the permission of a probation officer, court records show.
"The court has a lack of trust in the defendant at this time," Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal said in making the ruling, citing a pattern of deception and the possibility Nakoula was a flight risk.
The crudely made 13-minute movie, billed as a trailer, was filmed in California and circulated online under several titles including "Innocence of Muslims." It portrays the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and a sexual deviant.
On September 11 and in the ensuing days, the clip sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest across the Muslim world. The outbreak of violence coincided with an attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.
Federal probation officers investigating whether Nakoula, who was brought into the court wearing street clothes with his hands in cuffs and shackled at his waist, violated the terms of his release while making the film.
Federal prosecutors have made eight allegations against Nakoula of violating the terms of his release, including lying to probation officers. Nakoula's defense attorney had asked a federal judge in Los Angeles that he be given bond of $10,000.
BOUNTY FROM PAKISTAN
Nakoula has stayed out of the public eye for much of the past two weeks, amid outrage in Muslim countries over the film. Last week, Pakistani Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the video.
The Pakistani prime minister's office later distanced itself from the railways minister's statement.
Nakoula's attorney, Steve Seiden, said on Thursday he was "extremely concerned for (Nakoula's) safety," suggesting he might not be safe in federal prison in Los Angeles because of the presence of Muslim prisoners there.
Prosecutors countered that Nakoula would actually be safer in custody than on the outside.

Aaron Hall: I?m Aaron Hall, attorney at Minneapolis. I?m here with Travis Van Slooten. He provides local SEO (search engine optimization) to small businesses throughout the country. Travis, can you tell us a little more in what you do?
Travis Van Slooten: Yes. I provide local SEO services to small businesses throughout the United States, and what entails is getting small businesses visibility and most importantly, sales via the Internet. We do that through a number of things I do with businesses.
Aaron Hall: What is the most common problem that a client has which brings that client to you?
Travis Van Slooten: Well, the most common problem I have is?the businesses I work with typically don?t have a website, or they have a website but it?s poorly designed, and it?s nowhere to be found. I?m working with businesses that are really at that kind of entry level in terms of the Internet marketing.
Aaron Hall: How do you help them once they start working with you? What?s the process?
Travis Van Slooten: The main thing I do is I always ask the small business, ?What are you goals?? because everybody?s going to have different goals as to what they want to accomplish with their website or their Internet marketing. The first thing I always ask them is, ?What are the goals?? and of course, the inevitable answer is ?We want to make money, and we want to make it through the Internet.? That?s a little too broad. We want to be more specific so a lot of times, it?s sitting down with them and drilling into what it is they do. Are there certain aspects of their business they want to concentrate on more in terms of gaining sales and leads from the Internet? An example of that is I was working with a construction company down at Florida, and he does remodelling. He builds homes. Does a number of things. After talking to him, we discovered for him, he wanted to concentrate on his remodelling services, his remodelling business. Once we have the goal in mind, then from there, we can construct a strategy to achieve that goal.
Aaron Hall: Are there any common misunderstandings that new clients have when starting to work with you?
Travis Van Slooten: Yeah. The biggest thing is this misconception that SEO is inexpensive and easy to do. It always surprises me. I work with a small business, and a small business owner will spend thousands of dollars a years in print ads, radio ads, billboards without batting an eye because it?s traditional. They know but when you start talking to them about SEO and the difficulties of SEO with the recent updates that Google came out, SEO is becoming increasingly harder to do, and it?s becoming more expensive as a result. The misconception is that SEO is cheap and when you start talking prices about SEO even though it?s in line with radio, billboard advertising, and things that they?re comfortable with, they?re shocked that it would cost ?that much.? That?s the biggest challenge I have. Educating small business owners on what SEO is, what it takes, and what it costs to do effectively.
Aaron Hall: It?s interesting that in the early 2000?s, late 90?s, you could put up a website and it would just start getting traffic but these days, the businesses online are so competitive. Your client?s competitors are spending a lot of money in SEO, and I imagine that ups the ante for what is required for them and the competitiveness and the strategy that they need to use.
Travis Van Slooten: It?s that and as I?ve just briefly mentioned, it?s Google is really making it more difficult for the small business owner to do SEO on their own. With the recent updates, the penguin updates, the panda updates, most small business owners have no idea what that is but suffice it to say, SEO?s requiring almost a full-time job, and small business owners just simply don?t have the time to deal with it. It?s the competition that increasing and it?s also Google making things a little bit more difficult so all of that together is becoming increasingly difficult. It?s actually coming to a point now where a small business owner either has to get an in-house SEO person or outsource it. It?s almost impossible on their own now.
Aaron Hall: We talk about the small business. Can you give me some examples of small businesses you?ve worked with as far as what type of businesses are they?
Travis Van Slooten: I concentrate exclusively on the service based businesses. We?re talking about the roofers. I have a gutter contractor down at Florida. Construction companies, fencing companies, dentists, chiropractors, and even some law firms.
Aaron Hall: Interesting. I know that services provide a unique challenge from a website standpoint because it?s not ecommerce. It?s not just selling a product that you can just describe. You?re talking about the individuals and what services they provide. I understand a lot more what goes behind the scenes in planning that out.
Travis Van Slooten: Yes. Definitely, there?s that. When you?re selling a product, the product a lot of times sells itself because people know the product. When you?re selling a service based business, you have to sell that customer on that person a lot of times because I?m dealing typically with a lot of business owners. When somebody comes to the website, you have to sell them on that person so that means providing them testimonials, the better business accreditation badges, and things like that. Also, pointing them to other outside resources as social proof that this guy is good and is an honest, ethical business person and that type of thing. Those are the things you don?t have to do when you?re selling a product because typically like I said, people know it. Sells itself.

There?s a lot of buzz around the internet these days for marketing and growing your business.? The computing revolution of the last twenty years has indeed made running your own business much easier than before and certainly made managing a business more efficient and simple.
The internet also offers a whole range of opportunities to market your firm through social networking, but oddly one site Meetup.com has taken a rather unusual angle on the social networking trend.? With Meet Up you actually get to meet your friends and make new ones.? If this sounds like a one of those sites it?s not, and it?s actually a great take on the social networking phenomena.
What is Meet Up?
Meet Up allows you to create or join groups.? Simple as that really; however these groups are not restricted to the virtual world and, in fact, only use the virtual world to manage the groups.? The meetings themselves are firmly located in the real world.? Groups are focussed on just about every interest and pursuit that you can imagine, from macram? to mountaineering, and the site really just operates as a central point of contact for people to locate groups in their area and then join in with the fun.
But is it just for hobbies?
Meet Up is very keenly focussed on ?hobbies? but that doesn?t mean that it?s only for this purpose.? You can set up and run just about any group you wish; this could be a marketing seminar, or any talk relevant to your industry.? Generally, it?s not effective to set up a sales type show, but works best when creating events that are likely to be of interest to your target demographic.
By finding groups that are relevant to your products in your area you can join up and set up a talk, event or simply a summer barbeque!? This type of event gives you the chance to ?market by stealth? but the hard sell variety will be a big turn off to the groups? users, so tread softly.
Meet Up Tools
There are simple tools on the Meet Up site which allow you to create lists of attendees, print name badges, send email reminders and create an RSPV system to help you manage the event smoothly.? The site offers you, effectively, the ability to access an events management team, without the need to actually hire one.? While it may be useful to hire event managers for larger, corporate events, this type of site allows you to hold less formal talks, seminars and events.
Target Groups
Depending on the industry you are in there may already be a Meet Up group to match in your area.? If this is the case then it?s worth joining and setting up an event that will interest users.? You can focus your efforts on targeting either potential customers or setting up a more B2B type session.? Both have advantages to grow your client base, with the former being the most obvious type to grow new business.? Corporate and B2B events should not, however, be discounted.
These can help to raise your profile with other local businesses, and can be especially useful if you target firms who operate in similar, but not the same, fields as your own firm.? This can create a number of opportunities for referrals and partnership working, which in the current economic climate are excellent ways to keep a healthy order book.
Old Tricks and New Technology
It?s strange, perhaps, that in the era of online social networking, that this type of site should have been created.? However, it just goes to show, that whatever the internet is, it?s no substitute for good old fashioned networking!

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? When will men have their own birth control pill? Scientists have been predicting the debut of a male pill within 5 years for the last 30 years. The factors accounting for that delay ? and new optimism that a male pill will emerge within a decade ? are the topic of a story in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News.
C&EN is the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world?s largest scientific society.
In the story, Michael M. Torrice, C&EN associate editor, describes the need for a male version of the oral contraceptive pill that revolutionized family planning 50 years ago. For example, there are few choices of contraceptives for men, half of all U.S. pregnancies are unintended, and those pregnancies cost state and federal programs about $11 billion annually.
Despite that need, the few pharmaceutical companies working to develop a male pill have discontinued research during the last five years. The story explains the scientific and regulatory hurdles in developing new contraceptives and describes promising new research on so-called non-hormonal male contraceptives.

As we grow older, we somehow learn how to live with aches, as though there were nothing we could do about it. Such a passive approach can be very burdensome and painful. Learn what you can do to take the edge off arthritis and be stronger, more flexible and have less discomfort. In contrast to what many think, you can take a proactive role in the struggle against arthritic symptoms and progression.
Food plays a crucial role. Regardless of if you haven't any worries over weight gain, the foods you eat has a very major effect on the progression and pain of your arthritis. If you continually indulge in foods that aren't good for you, your symptoms will soar. Contrarily, eating healthy fuel is going to enable your body to battle cryptic conditions like arthritis and leave you stronger and more able. Being intelligent about your diet does not require a degree, library of books or a food consultant; you simply need to apply common sense to each bite.
Stress also factors into the melting pot. On the physical side, stress elevates your blood pressure and this can really pound on already painful joints. The compromise to your body will leave you knackered and exposed. On the mental side, stress is exhausting and self-defeating. Take a definite role in getting rid of stress and managing it well, and you will be doing wonders against arthritis (and anything else your body is encountering). Find time to relax, recuperate and enjoy.
Make sure to exercise regularly. The stronger your muscles are, the more flexible and able your whole body will be. Smart exercises can counterbalance arthritis at each step, so ask your GP to confirm a routine that you find fascinating and will make a point of doing continually. Add music or pals to keep incentive and interest high.
The role of acupuncture. From a historical viewpoint, acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of treatment for many infirmities. Irrespective of what your opinion of this medicinal system is, you have got to ask yourself why it's been around for such a long time. If it did not work, its popularity would have faded. Consider conferring first with a professional and reputable acupuncturist, asking them to detail exactly what it can do for your ailment. Follow that up with your own research or questions to your Rheumatologist, and you may be convinced to give it a try.
Taking vitamins and herbal supplements can be useful. Since your body isn't making all of its own necessary elements as efficiently as it once might have, you must consider supplementing it with outside sources. Be really careful and worked out on exactly what you take to avoid overdoing it or taking things that are totally nonessential. California took?the fast lane to the future on Tuesday when Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that lets self-driving cars onto public roads.
Brown rode to the signing ceremony at Google headquarters in the passenger seat of a vehicle that steered itself, a Prius modified by Google. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and State Sen. Alex Padilla, who sponsored the bill, were along for the ride. An engineer for the technology company, Chris Urmson, sat in the driver's seat, but the car drove itself.
"We're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality," Brown said just before signing the bill.
Google has been working on self-driving technology since 2010, including testing a fleet of self-driving cars along California roadways.
Google's driverless cars rely on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigation, according to the company.
The new law goes into effect next year and establishes safety and performance regulations for testing driverless cars, provided an operator is ready to take control if necessary.
However, it will likely take years before a fully self-driving autonomous vehicle hits the road, industry official say.
"I think the self driving car can really dramatically improve the quality of life," said Brin, who pointed to uses ranging from aiding the blind, ferrying revelers who drank too much, to simply making better use of commuting time.
He added that by driving closer together more safely than human-driven cars, self-driven cars might cut congestion.
But Google has no plans to build its own driverless cars.
"We have had great conversations with a variety of automakers," he said. "Anything we do is going to be in partnership with the industry."
The technology has been in the works since the 1950s, when General Motors showed off "dream cars" with features such as autopilot. Recently, carmakers have started incorporating into today's models some elements based on the innovations in those early vehicles, including adaptive cruise control or traffic-jam technologies that can slow the car automatically.
Carmakers developing autonomous technologies include BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, Nissan,?Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo, as well as suppliers, technology companies and universities.
Chip company Intel created a $100 million fund in February to invest in future auto technology.
Nevada and Florida have already passed laws allowing self-driving cars.?

As a matter of fact, most elderly people wish to remain home when they age. In this case, they wish to maintain their possessions and routines. Since it is natural that old age leads to lack of ability, some people calls for in home care. What is in home care? It refers to a range of social and health services delivered at one?s home. When it comes to in home care, this service is usually needed at the time an old person wish to stay at home but still need ongoing care which cannot be handled by family members.
There is a misunderstanding concept when we talk about senior homecare. People often think of it as a means of sending senior away to a range of facility. Some people do not want to be busy by taking care of seniors on their own, and this is why they call for in home care service to replace their task. This way is certainly a wrong concept since the nature of home care must be based on dignity. That means you still provide senior with great care and get it done when you have to work to make ends meet.
When it comes to senior homecare or companion care, it is important to still give your attention to the senior living in your home. Just in case the senior is your parent, you should do your own task as a child. In order that you can get reliable home care service for senior, you without a doubt need to consider some important aspects. First, it is necessary to determine your needs by which you can prioritize what you need help most. The next thing to consider is to ask the senior on what type of home care serve he/she want to have.

We caught wind of an upcoming video offering from Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks back, as part of a tip on new tablet offerings from the company. And while we've yet to hear anything official on the latter, this morning the bookstore pulled back the curtain on Nook Video, a new service boasting support from heavy hitters like HBO, Sony, Warner Brothers, Viacom and Disney. The fruits of those partnerships include standard and high-def movies and TV shows like The Avengers, Brave, The Amazing Spider-man, Breaking Bad, The Daily Show and Game of Thrones, which can be watched on Nooks, and non-Barnes & Noble tablets and smartphones, courtesy of a forthcoming free app from the retailer, letting you pick up where you left off on different devices.
The offering can also be linked to UltraViolet purchases, making it possible to add titles purchased with that feature logo to the Nook Cloud offering. Nook Video will be arriving in the US this fall, followed by a "holiday" release in the UK.

Asian stock markets drift lower as concerns rise about global economic weakness. Stock market optimism over stimulus from Fed and other central banks seems to be fading.?

Crude oil tumbled while the dollar rose against the euro but fell against the Japanese yen.
Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.4 percent to 9,070.78 and Seoul's Kospi index shed 0.2 percent to 1,999.18. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down less than 0.1 percent to 20,724.17 while Sydney's ASX S&P 200 fell 0.4 percent to 4,388.60. Benchmarks in Singapore and Indonesia also fell.
Strategists at Credit Agricole CIB wrote in a research note that the "euphoria emanating" from recent moves by the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan to stimulate growth is "fading quickly."
"The reality of weak growth and underlying structural tensions is coming back to haunt markets."
The Fed vowed in mid-September to buy billions in mortgage securities each month until the economy improves in a third round of what is known as quantitative easing, or QE3. The ECB and Bank of Japan followed with their own renewed bond-buying plans.
"There is this struggle between optimism towards QE3 and the concern about the global economic slowdown," said Louis Wong, a director at Phillip Securities in Hong Kong. "So investors are weighing the easing measures of central banks and the health of the global economy."
China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to 2,032.44, reversing losses earlier in the day. However, the benchmark is still at its lowest point since January 2009.
Chinese?stocks?are being hurt by a dispute between China and Japan over disputed islands that has heightened tensions between Asia's two biggest economies.
They're also under pressure as investors worry about what Chinese authorities will do to restart growth amid the country's economic slowdown. Wong said it's unlikely that Chinese authorities will unveil any major stimulus measures ahead of the National Day holiday next week or an expected but still unscheduled Communist Party meeting to hand over power to a next generation of leaders.
"This inaction by the Chinese government also weighs," Wong said.
Asian markets were also reacting to some downbeat economic reports released over the weekend. The U.S. Labor Department said that the unemployment rate rose in more than half of states last month, the latest evidence that hiring remains tepid across the world's biggest economy. The World Trade Organization, meanwhile, cut estimates for global trade growth for this year and next. Both reports came out on Friday after Asian markets closed.
In Tokyo, camera maker Canon Inc. slid 3.5 percent and global automaker Honda Motor Co. dropped 2 percent. Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. lost 2 percent. Petrochina, China's biggest oil and gas company, fell 1.6 percent.
On Wall Street Friday, markets were little changed. The Dow lost 0.1 percent to close at 13,579.47 while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 fell a minuscule 0.01 percent to 1,460.15. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 percent, to 3,179.96.
In currencies, the euro weakened to $1.2947 from $1.2989 in late trading Friday while the dollar fell to 78.07 Japanese yen from 78.15 yen.
U.S. benchmark crude for October delivery was down 82 cents to $92.08 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 47 cents to settle at $92.89 on Friday.

Have you ever been hit by reality? By this, I mean that you?ve been living in a fairy tale-like world. You thought that nothing could have gone wrong. Perhaps you even imagined that everything was perfect in your life. Unicorns existed and everything else ended in a happily ever after.
Then one day, you received a nasty taste of reality. You are dawned by what?s happening in life, and you suddenly get pulled into this rut. It feels as if you need to rethink everything.
I felt like this not too long ago. It felt as if I was a complete failure, heading in the wrong direction. Fortunately when I see myself in this kind of situation, it doesn?t take long for me to figure out what I?m doing wrong.
When you feel this way, you tend to become more aware of yourself. When you are hit by this kind of reality, realization comes into play.
You may suddenly stop with a sense of disappointment of what you lack.
You may even feel the urge to make changes. This is all nothing more than you getting a wake up call from reality.
The first thing that you need to do is to ask yourself if what you?re doing is important. If it isn?t, step up and say, ?Enough is enough? and take actions. You know what priorities you have, and you need to act on it. Otherwise, you will go nowhere.
For too long, I?ve been self-conceited and boastful. Being an egotistic helped me in some ways, but I was becoming a narcissist. I would not allow anyone to give me his or her opinions. As a result, I thought that my whole made up world was the best thing to exist. And that is why when reality hits, I am disappointed.
I have gotten much better now, being more open-minded. I?ve stopped thinking about how I am all that, because the truth is, I?m not at all.
Maybe you are disappointed at things that you can?t change. Try taking others? opinions as a chance, to see what you can do.
Perhaps by realizing that you did the best that you could have done, it will minimize any disappointment that you carry. Acknowledge to yourself that you?re doing the best that you can.
At one point, having fame and fortune was my goal. As I grow up, I began to realize that only a minority of people would actually be able to attain this kind of thing.
I had to appreciate what I had, or I was going to be living a miserable life for a long time. I had also found that having high expectations would get me nowhere.
Look at bodybuilders. Many people would not find their size appealing at all. You may even be disgusted at them, who knows. Yet, why do they continue to get bigger every year?
What about Steve Jobs? People at one point preferred Windows to Macs. What if he simply stopped believing in Apple because he couldn?t take the heat?
It all starts by looking at the big picture, and doing what you believe in doing.
Sometimes it may be best to rethink part of your life. But for the most part, it?s usually about doing what you love doing, and actually doing it. Even if people say that you aren?t capable of it, you still need to go out and prove them wrong.
As long as you wake up each morning, looking forward to your goals, you are heading in the right direction. If it doesn?t feel this way, set a time (preferably as soon as this article is over) and sit down.
Think to yourself ?what do I want to do??? At one point, your inner childhood used to dream of becoming a rock star, a scientist, or even an astronaut. Are you keeping those childhood dream alive?
When there is an end goal that you can agree on, don?t start it off right away. Instead, chop it up into small, mini goals?like when you?re eating your steak. Otherwise, you will not be able to take it all in.
You may feel like crap. But everyone feels like this at one point. It feels as if you?re phased out with the rest of the world. From my experience, it?s not that the world is fazing you out; it?s that you don?t believe in yourself enough.
Remember that before any success and a ?happily ever after? occurs, there must be a sense of self-belief to keep you moving forward.
The truth is, you and I are human. The occasional feeling of doubts and failures are certain to happen when we face an undiscovered territory.
It is something that is embedded in the human instinct. Don?t worry about whether you?ll make it through or not, but worry more about whether you?re going to take the steps to uncover the area, and how you plan on doing that.

Female VP at West Bank university says her new role inspires ambitions
By Judith Sudilovsky
Catholic News Service
BETHLEHEM, West Bank (CNS) -- Thirty-five years after the first class graduated from Bethlehem University, one of its members became the first woman and Palestinian to hold the Catholic school's highest academic position.
"No one ever imagined this position not being held by a (Christian) brother," said Irene Hazou, newly appointed academic vice president.
"My appointment has had a very positive impact on the faculty and staff at Bethlehem University because the more we have local people in high positions in the administration, the more they feel the university is deeply rooted in this culture and this country," she told Catholic News Service. "It gives them a sense of belonging and that this position can be reached; there need not be any limit to people's ambitions here at the university. I think that says a lot to many people."
Bethlehem University, the first university established in the West Bank, was founded in 1973 through the joint efforts of Palestinian educators, community leaders, the Vatican and the De La Salle Christian Brothers, who today run the university.
Hazou joins two male Palestinian colleagues who hold the positions of executive vice president and administrative vice president. The university's fourth vice president, for development, has traditionally been held by a De La Salle Christian Brother.
Hazou said the words of support and encouragement she received from her colleagues gave her a "deeper sense of responsibility," she said.
Her children -- a son, 23, and a daughter, 18 -- are pursuing interests in Italy and Brazil, respectively, so the new position has come at an ideal time for her, she said.
"Last year my daughter was in her last year of high school and needed all the attention and help I could give her," she said. "Now I have time on my hands and can focus on my work."
Hazou noted that though only a handful of Palestinian women have held vice president positions at Palestinian universities, female students now constitute the majority at the universities.
"As you move up the ladder in positions and degrees, then the numbers (of women) almost disappears. That is why even by Palestinian standards (my appointment) is quite significant," she said.
Noting her long association with the university, Christian Brother Peter Bray, vice chancellor, said Hazou will bring to her new position "a depth of understanding of Bethlehem University, a significant competence and expertise, and a deep awareness of the direction in which we need to move to ensure that the quality of what Bethlehem University offers students continue to improve."
Hazou, who earned her master's and doctorate from Oregon State University, said Bethlehem University has taken significant strides toward its goal of academic excellence in all sectors, including academic programs, teaching, learning and research.
Among the numerous goals she has set for herself are the development of the existing Center for Teaching Excellence and the establishment of a deanship for research. She said she hopes "action research" will help teachers assess and improve their teaching skills.
Hazou said she is aware that her long association with the university -- which, in some ways, is a help -- risks preventing her from pursuing ideas outside of the school's realm of comfort.
"I need to be considering innovative ideas to bring to my colleagues," she said. "I like to (have everyone) involved in the discussion. I don't fear differences in opinions. I appreciate seeing things in a new light. You need to be sensitive to what other people think."
Because of her deep connection with the university it is especially moving for her to now be in a position where she can follow through with ideas she believes will benefit the university, she said, particularly at this moment when the university is on the verge of "significant expansion" with the purchase-in-process of a nearby building.
With limited space to grow, the university has to carefully consider all options for the use of the property, an old hospital, and is weighing an array of possibilities ranging from enlarging current academic programs to establishing new departments, she said.
"Very exciting things are happening," she said.

Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. While the bulk of the apps purchased in that time will still work, around 90 that used the store's license management system will cease to function on November 2nd, a list of which you can find at the source link.
