Atlanta 2012 ?Decorating on a Dime? Contest Call for Entries ...

Atlanta Home Improvement magazine is now seeking entries from both resourceful do-it-yourself homeowners and design professionals for its 2012 ?Decorating on a Dime? Contest. Show us what you have done to improve the look of a home on a budget, and you could win some fabulous prizes! Last year, Kevin Zscach was our non-professional category winner and Yamini Mudalair was our professional category winner. Kevin received a $1,500 home improvement prize package for his budget back porch makeover, and Yamini won an advertising and marketing package from Atlanta Home Improvement worth $10,000 for her guest bedroom makeover. Both winners had their projects published in the magazine?s February 2011 issue along with several other Honorable Mentions.

Since winning our last contest, Kevin and his family have moved to a new house, and he has worked his budget decorating magic on one of its guest bathrooms. Builder-grade no more! Take a look at the before-and-after makeover:

And, here?s the budget breakdown from Kevin himself:

  • $45 on faucet (ebay)
  • $35 on new trim and beadboard (Not actual beadboard?I found some trim at a local building surplus they were discounting. They are horizontal individual planks. I wanted to make the room look larger so I installed them horizontally.)
  • $10 Shower curtain on clearance at Target
  • $7 Valance on clearance table runner at Target
  • $75 Tile and supplies bought using ?Decorating on a Dime? Contest winnings
  • Light fixture is from a friend who gave to us after moving into the Terminus building and changing out her fixtures
  • $40 Countertop from Ikea. It is an 8-foot piece, so I am going to make a table out of the rest.
  • Mirror from the basement?I just painted it.
  • Paint?I mixed some white and black together to get the wall color and the vanity color. The ceiling paint I had leftover from a previous project.
  • I cut scrap wood into legs for the bottom of the cabinet to give it that furniture-like detail.

That?s a total of just $212! See how more people redecorated their homes for under $1,000 by checking out all the winning ?Decorating on a Dime? Contest entries from last year.
