MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (AP) -- A school spokesman says firefighters have put out a fire that damaged a classroom building at Cornell College in the eastern Iowa city of Mount Vernon.
College spokesman Jamie Kelly said a few firefighters were still on the scene Friday morning, checking for hot spots. Police say a lightning strike started the blaze just after 3:30 a.m., and several nearby fire departments were called for help. No injuries have been reported.
Kelly says no one was in College Hall when it was struck. He says a bell cupola atop the building was destroyed, and there was some fire damage in the attic. Kelly says the building was built in 1857.
Cornell College's website says Cornell is a private, liberal arts school with an enrollment of nearly 1,200.
